Bosch induction cooktop not working?

Bosch induction cooktops are common in renovated Inner West kitchens, and when one stops working the cause tends to fall into one of three groups: a setting or safety feature on the cooktop, the electrical supply to it, or a fault inside the appliance.

Sort out which group you're in with the checks below. If it points to the supply, ring 0421 772 661.

Safety first

Before you do anything.

If the glass is cracked, smoke has come from under the bench, or you smell burning, switch the cooktop off at the switchboard and stop using it. Call 000 if there's fire. Cracked glass on an induction cooktop can expose live parts, so don't touch the damaged area.

Don't lift the cooktop out or remove any panels. Bosch cooktops are hard-wired, and everything below can be checked without tools.

Quick checks

Safe things you can check yourself.

!

Is there any display at all?

A completely dark control panel suggests no power. Any light or symbol means power is arriving and the issue is more likely a setting or an appliance fault.

!

Check the child lock

Bosch cooktops have a childproof lock that stops the controls responding. The manual for your model explains how to switch it off.

!

Clear the control area

Many induction cooktops switch off or ignore touches if there's liquid, a cloth or a pan over the controls. Wipe the panel dry and clear it, then try again.

!

Check the cookware

Induction only works with magnetic pans. If a zone won't heat with one pan but does with another, the pan is the issue. A fridge magnet that sticks firmly to the base is a good quick test.

!

Check the switchboard and isolator

Make sure the isolator near the cooktop is on, and look for a tripped breaker or safety switch. Reset once only.

Causes

What usually causes it.

Supply interrupted. A tripped breaker or RCD, an isolator turned off, or a connection that has loosened and burnt at the isolator or switchboard. A cooktop that's dark while its breaker shows on is a classic sign of a failed connection, which is electrical work we test and repair.

Safety features doing their job. Bosch, like most makers, builds in automatic switch-off and lock functions. These make a working cooktop look faulty. The display message or symbol, read against the manual, usually explains it.

Undersized or shared circuit. If a Bosch induction cooktop replaced an older electric cooktop, the original circuit may not match what the new unit needs. Breakers tripping on high settings or when several zones run together can point to this. The installation manual states the supply requirement, and we check the circuit against it.

Internal faults. If the supply tests correct and the cooktop shows a fault code or won't respond, the fault is inside the appliance. Bosch's service network handles those repairs; an electrician shouldn't be opening the unit.

When to call

When it needs an electrician.

Call an electrician if the cooktop is completely dead with the breaker on, if a breaker or safety switch keeps tripping, if the isolator or bench area feels warm, or if the problem started after a renovation or other electrical work.

We test the supply at the connection point and confirm the circuit and protection suit the cooktop, then tell you whether to book Bosch service. Read more on our Bosch induction cooktop installation page.

Questions

Common questions

My Bosch cooktop shows a code. What does it mean?

Bosch lists its display codes in the user manual and on its support site. Look up your exact model rather than relying on generic lists.

Why won't my Bosch cooktop turn on even though the light is on?

Check the child lock and make sure the controls are dry and clear. If it still won't respond, it may need Bosch service.

One zone works and another doesn't. Is it electrical?

Usually not, if other zones work fine. It's more often cookware or an internal fault. On two-phase connections, though, a missing phase can disable some zones.

Do you repair Bosch cooktops?

We repair the electrical supply and connections. Internal repairs go through Bosch's service network.

Can I swap my old cooktop for a Bosch induction on the same circuit?

Sometimes. It depends on the circuit's size and condition and what the new cooktop needs. We check before connecting it.
