Clipsal Iconic is built in layers: a cover plate, a grid and separate switch or power point mechanisms clipped in behind. When a switch stops working, the problem might be the light, the circuit, the mechanism or the wiring behind it.
A few safe checks will often tell you which. If not, call 0421 772 661 and we'll test it.
If the switch feels hot, crackles, sparks when you press it, or there's a burning smell or brown marks on the plate, stop using it. Turn off the circuit at the switchboard if it's safe to do so and call an electrician. Call 000 if there's fire.
Iconic plates unclip easily, which makes it tempting to have a look. Please don't. Live terminals sit right behind the plate. Leave the plate, grid and mechanisms in place.
If it's a light switch, try a globe you know works, or check whether other lights on the same switch are also out. A blown globe or failed LED fitting is the most common 'broken switch'.
Look for a tripped lighting or power circuit breaker or safety switch. Reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off and call us.
If the light is controlled from two places, the other switch's position matters. Try flicking the other switch before deciding this one has failed.
If your Iconic switch is a smart or app-connected version, check the app shows it online. If your Wi-Fi or hub changed, follow the setup steps in Clipsal's manual for that mechanism.
A rocker that feels loose, mushy or doesn't click positively suggests a worn mechanism. Note it and let us know.
The light, not the switch. Failed globes, LED drivers or downlights are much more common than failed switches. Testing the fitting first saves money.
Worn or failed mechanism. Switch mechanisms wear with use, and one that's been forced or damaged may stop making contact. Because Iconic mechanisms are modular, we can often replace just the failed one and keep the plate and grid. It's still licensed work.
Loose connection. A terminal that has loosened can cause intermittent operation, flicker and heat. That's the reason a warm switch should never be ignored.
Circuit problems. If several switches or power points have stopped at once, the problem is upstream: a tripped circuit or a fault in the wiring. Our guide to power out in part of the house covers that scenario. For a dead power point specifically, see power point not working.
Call us if a new globe doesn't help, if the switch is warm or sparks, if lights come and go when you touch the switch, or if several switches or outlets have stopped together.
We test the circuit, the mechanism and the connections, then replace the faulty part. Our Clipsal Iconic installation page explains the range, and our power point installation service covers new or replacement outlets.
No. Even though it clips in, it's connected to mains wiring, and replacing it is licensed electrical work in NSW.
The mechanism may be worn or a connection may be loose. Stop using it and have it checked.
Usually not. It's a network or app issue. Follow Clipsal's setup steps or contact their support.
Not usually. Iconic mechanisms can generally be replaced individually, and the plate kept if it's undamaged.
That points to the circuit rather than the switches. Check the switchboard, and call us if it won't reset.
