Power point hot to touch?

A power point should feel about the same temperature as the wall around it. If the faceplate, switch or plug feels warm or hot, heat is being made where it shouldn't be, and that is a fire risk.

Stop using it and ring 0421 772 661. We'll find out whether it's the outlet, the wiring behind it or what's plugged in.

Safety first

Before you do anything.

Switch the power point off and, if you can do it without touching anything hot, unplug the appliance by its plug body. If there is smoke, a burning smell, melting or scorching, turn off the main switch at the switchboard if it is safe to reach and keep clear. Call 000 for any fire.

Don't remove the faceplate, don't keep using the outlet to "see if it settles", and don't tape over it. Leave the circuit off until it has been tested.

Why it matters

Heat means resistance somewhere

Electricity flowing through a good, tight connection makes very little heat. A loose terminal, a worn contact or an overloaded outlet adds resistance, and resistance turns current into heat. The hotter it gets, the more the metal oxidises and loosens, so the problem tends to get worse rather than better.

That's why a warm power point is different from a warm appliance. A heater or a laptop charger can be warm by design. The outlet it plugs into should not be.

Safe checks

What you can safely look at

Do these with the power point switched off where possible. If anything looks damaged, leave it off.

!

What's plugged in?

Heaters, kettles, air fryers, dryers and portable air conditioners draw a lot of current. One of these running for hours is the most common load behind a hot outlet.

!

Look at the plug

Check the plug pins and body for discolouring, melting or a brown mark. A damaged plug can heat the outlet too; stop using that appliance until it's checked.

!

Double adaptors and boards

Several high-draw appliances on one outlet through an adaptor or power board can overload it. Spread heavy loads across different circuits.

!

Does the plug feel loose?

A plug that falls out or wobbles means the contacts inside the outlet are worn. That outlet needs replacing.

!

Check nearby outlets

Note whether other power points on the same wall or circuit feel warm. That helps us tell a single bad outlet from a circuit problem.

Causes

The usual culprits

Loose terminals. The screws holding the wires in the back of the outlet can loosen over years of heating and cooling. This is the most common cause we find and it's not visible from the front.

Worn outlet contacts. Old power points lose their grip on the plug pins. A poor contact heats up, especially with heavy loads.

Sustained heavy load. A heater or similar appliance run for hours on one outlet, sometimes through a power board, can push it beyond what it handles comfortably.

Wiring further back. In older homes, a tired connection in a junction or another outlet on the same run can show up as heat at the point you touch. We test along the circuit, not just at the faceplate.

What we do

How we fix it

We isolate the circuit, open the outlet, check the terminals and cable for heat damage, and test the circuit's insulation and protection. Usually the fix is a new power point and remade connections; if the cable itself is heat-damaged we cut back to sound cable or replace the run.

If you can smell burning from the outlet, read our guide to a burning smell from a power point. If the outlet has stopped working altogether, see power point not working.

Questions

Common questions.

Is a slightly warm power point okay?

With a heavy appliance running, the plug may be slightly warm. The outlet faceplate itself should not feel noticeably warm. If it does, stop using it and have it checked.

Can I keep using it until the electrician arrives?

No. Switch it off and leave it off. Heat damage gets worse with use.

Is it the appliance or the power point?

It can be either. If the plug is discoloured or the appliance is faulty, it can heat the outlet. We test both sides.

Will replacing the power point fix it?

Often, yes, if the outlet or its terminals are the problem. If the cable behind has been damaged by heat, that section needs repair too.

Are power boards safe for heaters?

It's best to plug high-draw heaters straight into a wall outlet, and not share that outlet with other heavy loads.
