Alarm panel has no power?

A blank keypad and a silent alarm usually mean the panel has lost mains power and its backup battery has since gone flat. The alarm isn't protecting the house in that state, so it's worth sorting quickly.

Start with the checks below. If the panel stays dead, ring 0421 772 661 and we'll test the supply, transformer and battery.

Safety first

Before you do anything.

Don't open the alarm panel enclosure or the switchboard. If you see scorch marks, smell burning or find water near the panel, its power supply or the switchboard, turn off at the main switch only if it's safe, and keep clear. Call 000 if there's fire or injury.

If your smoke alarms are hardwired and also without power, treat that as a priority. Smoke alarms are separate from a security alarm and are critical for safety.

Quick checks

Safe things you can check yourself.

!

Check the house has power

If lights and power points elsewhere are off too, it may be a network outage. Check Ausgrid's outage information or call 13 13 88.

!

Find the plugpack

Many panels are powered from a plugpack or transformer plugged into a nearby power point, often in a cupboard, laundry or garage. Check it's plugged in fully and the power point is switched on.

!

Test the power point

If the panel uses a plugpack, plug a lamp or phone charger into that power point to see if it works. If it doesn't, the outlet or its circuit is the problem.

!

Check the switchboard

Look for a tripped breaker or safety switch, especially one labelled alarm, security or the room where the panel lives. Reset once. If it trips again, leave it off and call us.

!

Give the battery time

Once mains power is restored, the keypad may come back but show a battery fault while the battery recharges. If the fault doesn't clear in a reasonable time, the battery likely needs replacing.

Causes

What usually causes it.

Plugpack unplugged or failed. The most common find is a plugpack that has been knocked out, switched off with the power point, or simply worn out. Plugpacks can fail without obvious signs.

Tripped or faulty circuit. If the panel's power point or hardwired supply is on a circuit that has tripped, the alarm runs on battery until it goes flat. A circuit that keeps tripping needs fault finding, not resetting over and over.

Supply wiring or transformer fault. Hardwired panels can lose power through a loose connection or failed transformer. That's licensed electrical work, and in older homes we sometimes find the alarm supply wired in ways that no longer meet current standards.

Panel or battery fault. If the supply measures correctly and the panel is still dead, the panel itself may have failed. That's a matter for the alarm's manufacturer or your installer; we'll confirm the electrical supply is right first.

When to call

When it needs an electrician.

Call us if the outlet or circuit feeding the alarm has no power, the alarm circuit trips, the panel is dead with a working supply, or the battery fault won't clear.

We hold an NSW Security Licence (S00014414) and Electrical Contractor Licence (332956C), so we can repair the power supply and look at the alarm in the same visit. Our home alarm installation guide explains what a good setup looks like.

Questions

Common questions

Why is my alarm keypad completely blank?

Usually the panel lost mains power and the backup battery has since run flat. Check the plugpack, power point and switchboard first.

Will my alarm still work in a blackout?

For a while, on its backup battery. How long depends on the battery's condition and the system. Old batteries may last very little time.

The alarm came back on but shows a battery fault. Is that normal?

It can be while the battery recharges after a long outage. If the fault stays, the battery probably needs replacing.

Can I plug the alarm plugpack into a power board?

It's better on a dedicated, labelled power point where it won't be switched off or unplugged by accident.

Can you move the alarm's power supply?

Yes, we can install a dedicated outlet or hardwired supply in a better location as part of an alarm service.
