Bosch alarm beeping?

A Bosch alarm keypad that keeps beeping when nobody has triggered it is normally reporting a system trouble condition, not a break-in. The panel is telling you something needs attention, and the keypad display or app usually says what.

Use the checks below to work out what it's flagging. If you can't clear it, call 0421 772 661 and we'll test the panel's power, battery and wiring.

Safety first

Before you do anything.

If the alarm panel, its transformer or the switchboard is hot, smells of burning or shows scorch marks, leave it alone. Switch off at the main switch if it's safe and call us, or 000 if there's fire or injury.

Don't open the alarm panel enclosure. Opening it can trigger a tamper alarm, and the panel contains a mains connection and a backup battery. Leave internal checks to a licensed installer.

Quick checks

Safe things you can check yourself.

!

Read the keypad or app

Most Bosch keypads show a trouble or fault message alongside the beeping, and the app may show the same. Write down exactly what it says and look up its meaning in your user manual or Bosch's support material.

!

Check for a power cut

If the power went off recently, the panel may be warning that it lost mains power or that the backup battery ran down. Check Ausgrid's outage information or call 13 13 88.

!

Check the switchboard

Look for a tripped breaker or safety switch, particularly one labelled alarm. Reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off and call us.

!

Check doors, windows and sensors

A door or window left open, or something blocking or knocking a sensor, can show as a zone problem. Walk through the house and look.

!

Acknowledge with your user code

On many panels, entering your user code acknowledges the trouble and silences the beeping. The exact steps differ by panel, so check your manual. If you don't have a code, contact the installer or monitoring company.

Causes

What usually causes it.

Low or failed backup battery. Alarm panels have a rechargeable backup battery so they keep working through power cuts. Batteries age and lose capacity, and a weak one is one of the most common reasons for trouble beeping. Replacing it is a routine service job.

Mains power fault. If the panel's mains supply has failed, through a tripped circuit, a failed plugpack or transformer, or a loose connection, the panel runs on battery and warns you. Once the battery runs flat, the system stops.

Tamper or zone trouble. A sensor cover that has been knocked, a damaged sensor cable, or a problem in a zone's wiring can register as tamper or zone trouble. Wired sensors in older homes sometimes have cables damaged during renovations.

Communication or programming issues. Panels that report to a monitoring service may warn when they can't communicate, which can happen after a phone line or internet change. Programming and communication settings are a matter for the installer or monitoring company.

When to call

When it needs an electrician.

Call us if the beeping returns after acknowledging it, the panel has no mains power with the house power on, the battery warning keeps returning, or there's a tamper or zone fault you can't trace.

We hold an NSW Security Licence (S00014414) and test the panel's power supply, battery and zone wiring. Our Bosch alarm installation page explains how these systems are set up.

Questions

Common questions

Why is my Bosch alarm beeping when it isn't armed?

It's most likely reporting a trouble condition such as a low battery, mains failure, tamper or zone fault. Check the keypad display or app, and your manual for what it means.

How do I stop my Bosch alarm beeping?

On many panels entering your user code acknowledges the fault and silences it, but the cause stays until it's fixed. Check your manual for the exact steps.

Can I change the alarm battery myself?

It's inside the panel, so opening it can set off a tamper alarm and expose mains wiring. We recommend having a licensed installer do it.

It started beeping after a blackout. Is it broken?

Probably not. The panel may be reporting the power loss or a run-down battery. If it doesn't clear once power is back and the battery recharges, have it tested.

I don't know my installer code. Can you help?

We can look at the system, but code and programming access depends on the panel and who installed it. Contact the original installer or monitoring company first.
