Emergencies and faults
Do you take after-hours calls?
Yes. Call 0421 772 661 and we will tell you when we can attend.
What should I do first in an electrical emergency?
If there is fire, smoke or someone has had a shock, call 000. If it is safe, switch off the main switch at the switchboard and keep people away from the problem.
Can you make it safe and come back for the full repair?
Yes. Sometimes the safest option is to isolate the fault first, then quote the full repair.
Why do my lights flicker?
Loose connections, failing LED drivers or incompatible dimmers are common causes. Flickering across the whole house can also be a supply issue.
Is a tingle from a tap or appliance dangerous?
Yes. Stop using it and call an electrician straight away, as it can indicate an earthing fault.
Why is my power point warm?
Warmth, discolouration or a burning smell can mean a loose connection or overload. Stop using it and get it checked.
Is it safe to use power boards?
Used sensibly, yes, but chaining boards together or running heaters from them is risky. Permanent points are the better fix.

Safety switches and switchboards
Why does my safety switch keep tripping?
Faulty appliances, moisture in outdoor fittings and damaged cables are the most common causes. Unplug appliances on the circuit and reset. If it still trips, call us.
Why won't my safety switch reset?
A safety switch that trips again straight away usually means a faulty appliance or circuit is still connected. Unplug everything on that circuit and try again. If it still trips, call us.
How often should I test my safety switch?
Press the test button regularly, such as every three months. If it does not trip, call an electrician.
What is the difference between a safety switch and a circuit breaker?
A circuit breaker protects the wiring from overload and short circuits. A safety switch (RCD) detects current leaking to earth and protects people from shock.
How do I know if my switchboard needs upgrading?
Ceramic fuses, no safety switches, scorch marks, frequent tripping or no room for new circuits are the usual signs. We can inspect the board and tell you whether it needs a full upgrade or a smaller fix.
Is a switchboard upgrade the same as adding safety switches?
Not always. Some boards can take extra RCDs or RCBOs without a full replacement. Others are too old or too full, and a new board is the safer option.
What if my old board has asbestos?
Older backing panels may contain asbestos. We do not drill or cut them, and we explain the safe options for replacement before work starts.
Will the power be off during the upgrade?
Yes, for part of the job. We plan the changeover so the house is off supply for as little time as practical, and we explain the timing beforehand.

Smoke alarms
How many smoke alarms does a NSW home need?
At least one working smoke alarm on every level. Alarms near bedrooms and hallways give better protection.
How often should smoke alarms be replaced?
Most manufacturers recommend replacement about every 10 years. Check the date on the back of the alarm.
Can I replace a hardwired smoke alarm myself?
No. Hardwired 240 V smoke alarms must be installed or replaced by a licensed electrician.
Why does my smoke alarm keep chirping?
Usually a low backup battery or an alarm reaching the end of its life. We can check and replace it.

Lighting
Can I replace halogen downlights with LED?
Yes. We usually replace the whole fitting and transformer with an LED fitting rather than just swapping the globe, which gives better results and fewer failures.
Will my existing dimmer work with LEDs?
Not always. LED fittings need a compatible dimmer, otherwise they can flicker or buzz. We match the dimmer to the fittings.
What does IC-rated mean?
IC-rated downlights can be covered by ceiling insulation. Non-IC fittings need clearance around them, which leaves gaps in the insulation.

EV chargers
Do I need a dedicated circuit for an EV charger?
Yes. A wall charger runs for hours at high current, so it needs its own protected circuit installed by a licensed electrician.
Can you install a charger I already bought?
Usually, yes. Tell us the make and model of the charger and your car, and we will confirm it suits your home.
Do I need a switchboard upgrade for an EV charger?
Sometimes. We check the board and your supply first. If there is capacity and room, the charger circuit can often go in without replacing the board.

Security cameras
Can I watch the cameras on my phone?
Yes, most modern recorders support phone viewing. We set it up and show you how.
Can my cameras record the street or next door?
Cameras should focus on your own property. Avoid pointing them into neighbours' homes or yards.
Do you hold a security licence?
Yes, NSW Security Licence S00014414 for CCTV installation, plus Electrical Contractor Licence 332956C. We're fully insured.

Appliances and air conditioning
Do you install the air conditioner itself?
We do the electrical side: the circuit, isolator and connection. The unit and refrigerant work are done by a licensed air conditioning installer.
Does a split system need its own circuit?
Most do. The unit's installation manual sets the circuit size, and a dedicated circuit avoids overloading other circuits.
Do you connect gas?
No, a licensed gasfitter does that. We do the electrical side.
Can the oven and cooktop share a circuit?
Sometimes, if the circuit is sized for the combined load under the wiring rules. With an induction cooktop they are often better on separate circuits. We work it out from both rating plates.
