Homes and electrical work in the Inner West
The Inner West has one of Sydney's highest shares of semis and terraces. At the 2021 Census, 27.1% of homes in the Inner West council area were semi-detached, row or terrace houses or townhouses, with 28.8% separate houses and 42.4% flats or apartments. Further west the mix changes: Canterbury-Bankstown was 55.0% separate houses, while Strathfield was 59.5% flats or apartments.
Many terraces and semis in Marrickville, Newtown, Leichhardt, Balmain and Annandale were built well before modern wiring rules. We often find old rubber or early PVC cable, ceramic fuses, and switchboards with one safety switch or none. Shared walls, narrow halls and low roof spaces make cable routes harder to plan, and party-wall wiring sometimes crosses between homes. Renovations, gas-to-electric conversions and heat pump hot water are common reasons people find this out.
The poles, wires and meters here are run by Ausgrid. For street outages or fallen lines call Ausgrid on 13 13 88. Service-line and metering work is Level 2 work, which we refer to an Accredited Service Provider; we work on your side of the meter.

Common questions
Does my terrace need a full rewire?
Not always. If the wiring is old rubber-insulated cable or the switchboard still has ceramic fuses, a rewire is usually worth discussing. Otherwise, testing the existing circuits may show that a switchboard upgrade and some targeted work is enough.
Can I go all-electric in a terrace with a small switchboard?
Often, yes, but induction cooking, heat pump hot water and air conditioning add load. We check the board, the supply and the circuits before you commit, so you know what upgrade, if any, is needed.
Who do I call for a power outage in the Inner West?
Ausgrid, on 13 13 88, for street or network outages. If only your home is out, check your switchboard first.
