What we check first: the switchboard

In a Federation house in Homebush, the meter box is often on the side wall or front verandah, holding a board that has been added to piece by piece. Rewireable fuses protect the cable, not people, so a fault can go unnoticed until it's serious. A full board also means new circuits get squeezed onto old ones, which is how overloads start.
