Not every older house needs a full rewire. Sometimes the kitchen circuits are new and the lighting is eighty years old, or a renovation opens up half the house and the rest is fine. Partial rewiring replaces the sections that have failed or are about to, and leaves sound wiring in place.
Ring 0421 772 661. We test before we quote, so the decision about what to keep is based on measurements, not on the age of the house.
We start at the switchboard and test each circuit's insulation resistance and earth continuity. Readings that are low or falling point to cable whose insulation is breaking down. Rubber-insulated (VIR) cable from before the 1960s is the usual culprit in Inner West houses, and it often turns up on lighting circuits even where the power points have been redone.
Those readings, plus a look at the cable itself in the roof space and under the floor, let us group the house into three kinds of circuit: ones that are fine, ones that should be replaced soon, and ones that shouldn't stay connected at all. The quote follows that order.
Most partial rewires fall into a few patterns:
Old rubber cable on the lights replaced while newer power circuits stay, usually from the roof space with little wall damage.
The kitchen, bathroom or extension rewired while walls are open, with new circuits back to the board.
Downstairs now, upstairs later, so the house stays livable and the work is spread out.
Failed circuits disconnected straight away so the rest of the house can stay powered.
A new board with RCBO protection when the old one can't safely protect the new and remaining circuits.
Earth continuity checked and an earth added where old lighting circuits never had one.
If testing shows the same failing cable throughout, rewiring piece by piece usually costs more overall and leaves you with old wiring in the walls you didn't open. We'll say so and explain why a full house rewire makes more sense. Our guide to old wiring in Inner West terraces covers what we commonly find behind the plaster.
Every new circuit is installed and tested to AS/NZS 3000. Once the work is finished we issue a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW), as NSW requires. You also get a short written note of which circuits were replaced and which were tested and kept, which is useful when you sell or plan the next stage. The new work carries our lifetime workmanship warranty, and we're fully insured.
Only if the wiring that stays tests as sound and every circuit is protected by a safety switch. If a circuit fails testing, we recommend replacing or isolating it.
We test insulation resistance and earth continuity on each circuit at the switchboard and inspect the cable in the roof and subfloor. Low readings and perished insulation decide it.
Yes. Many Inner West owners do one floor or one zone at a time, often alongside renovation work, starting with the circuits that tested worst.
Not always. If the existing board can't fit safety switches for the new and remaining circuits, or is on an old asbestos panel, replacing it is usually part of the job.
Yes. The Inner West is where most of our older-home work is, but we do rewiring across Sydney.
