Terraces in Newtown, Glebe, Annandale, Balmain and nearby suburbs bring their own challenges to going all-electric: long thin floor plans, shared walls, tight rear courtyards and switchboards that were often installed decades ago.
Ring 0421 772 661 to talk about your terrace. Photos of the meter box, switchboard and back courtyard help us plan.
Many terraces have been rewired at least once, but often in stages. It's common to find newer circuits alongside older cabling, a meter box at the front and the kitchen at the back, and a switchboard with little or no spare space. Before adding heavy electric loads, it's worth knowing the condition of the existing wiring. Our guide to old wiring in Inner West terraces covers what we typically find.
The meter-to-kitchen distance matters. A cooktop circuit run the full length of a terrace needs heavier cable than the same circuit in a compact house, and the route, through a ceiling with little roof space or under a low floor, takes planning.
Space outside is the main constraint in a terrace. Heat pump hot water units, split system condensers and an EV charger all want a spot, and each has its own needs.
Often goes in the rear courtyard or side passage. Think about noise near bedrooms and your neighbours' windows. See gas hot water to heat pump.
Wall brackets or rear courtyard. A licensed refrigeration technician installs the units; we wire them.
Usually the longest run from the board. See gas to induction conversion.
Many terraces have no off-street parking. Where there's a rear lane garage or carport, the cable route is often long. See EV charger installation.
Most terraces are single-phase. That's normally workable for an electric terrace, since the floor area and number of heating zones are modest, but we still check the main switch, consumer mains and realistic peak load. See our supply capacity check.
If the board has ceramic fuses or no spare space, a switchboard upgrade is usually the first step. On terraces where the board sits in a tight hallway or front room, we plan the new enclosure to suit the space and leave room for future circuits.
In heritage conservation areas, the position of outdoor units on street-facing walls can be a council consideration, so check before choosing a spot at the front. Gas disconnection is done by a licensed gasfitter and hot water plumbing by a licensed plumber. We fit in around both.
Blue Link Electrical is based in Hurlstone Park and works on terraces across the Inner West. Our terrace house electrician page has more on general terrace work.
In most cases yes. We check the supply and switchboard and plan the loads so they don't all peak together.
Usually the rear courtyard or side passage, away from bedroom windows where possible. Your plumber and we look at the route together.
Sometimes. Terraces vary, and we look for routes through the ceiling, under the floor or along existing paths to minimise disturbance.
Not necessarily. We test the existing wiring and tell you what's sound and what isn't.
We can only install a charger on your own property where the car parks. Cables across footpaths are not something we install.
