Is your supply big enough to go all-electric?

The question we're asked most by people moving off gas is whether the house can actually take it. The honest answer is usually yes, with planning, but it's worth checking properly before you buy appliances.

Ring 0421 772 661 and send photos of your meter box, main switch and switchboard. That's often enough for a first opinion.

What sets the limit

Four things we look at.

Your home's capacity isn't one number on the switchboard. It's a chain, and the weakest link sets the limit.

!

Service fuse

Owned by the network and usually in or near the meter box. Its rating limits what can be drawn from the street.

!

Consumer mains

The cable from the point of supply to your main switch. Older houses can have small or tired mains.

!

Main switch

Its rating and condition matter, but replacing it alone doesn't add supply.

!

Single or three-phase

Most Inner West homes are single-phase. Three-phase spreads load across three supplies, where it's available.

Real-world demand

It's about what runs at the same time.

Adding up every appliance's maximum gives a frightening number that never actually happens. What matters is the realistic peak: a winter evening with induction cooking, the oven on, two split systems heating, the dryer going and possibly the car charging. We estimate that peak from rating plates and how you actually live, and compare it with what the supply can carry.

Heat pump hot water and EV charging are the easiest loads to move. A heat pump can often run on a timer during the day or overnight, and most EV chargers can be scheduled or set to reduce output when the house is busy. Those two choices alone often make the difference between needing a supply upgrade and not.

If it's not enough

Options when supply is tight.

First, load management: scheduling, charger current limits, or a load controller. Second, fixing what's between the meter and the board: replacing undersized consumer mains or an old main switch, often alongside a switchboard upgrade. Third, a supply upgrade, which means an application to Ausgrid and network-side work by an Accredited Service Provider. Our page on Level 2 electricians explains who does what.

Moving to three-phase is possible on some properties but involves the network, can be a significant job, and is only worth it if you'll genuinely use it. Our single vs three-phase EV charging page discusses this for car charging specifically.

Our process

How we check your home.

We inspect the meter box, mains and switchboard, list your planned appliances with their ratings, and talk through when you use them. You get a plain-English summary: what fits as is, what needs load management, and what would need a board or supply upgrade. That way your gasfitter, plumber and air conditioning installer can be booked in a sensible order.

Questions

Common questions.

How do I know if I'm single-phase or three-phase?

Usually by the main switch and meter: three-phase homes typically have a three-pole main switch. We can confirm from a photo.

Can I go all-electric on single-phase?

Most Inner West homes can, with sensible planning and some load management for the EV charger and hot water.

Does a new switchboard increase my supply?

No. It adds space and protection. The supply depends on the network connection, service fuse and consumer mains.

Who upgrades the supply from the street?

Network-side work requires an application to Ausgrid and is carried out by an Accredited Service Provider.

Should I check supply before buying an induction cooktop or EV charger?

Yes. It's cheaper to plan before you buy than to work around the wrong appliance afterwards.
