Switchboards for an all-electric home

Most old switchboards were set up for a home with gas cooking, gas hot water and a handful of lighting and power circuits. Go all-electric and you might add five or six heavy circuits. The board is where all of that has to fit, safely.

The problem

Why old boards run out.

Older Inner West switchboards often have rewireable ceramic fuses, a mix of breakers added over the years, limited or no safety switch protection, and an asbestos-backed panel. Even newer boards are frequently full. There is nowhere to put the extra circuits that induction, a heat pump, air conditioning and an EV charger each need.

Squeezing circuits onto an unsuitable board, or doubling up loads on one breaker, is how nuisance tripping and overheating start. When several appliances are changing, it usually makes sense to replace the board once, properly, rather than patch it each time. Our guide to the signs you need a switchboard upgrade covers the warning signs.

Designing the new board

Planning for the whole house.

We lay out the new board for what you will have in a few years, not just this month. That means listing every expected large load and leaving room for it, even if the appliance comes later.

!

Room for new circuits

Spaces for cooktop, oven, hot water, each split system, EV charger and any future additions.

!

RCBO on every circuit

One fault trips one circuit, not half the house. See RCD vs RCBO.

!

Main switch and supply

Checked against the combined load. A bigger enclosure doesn't increase what the supply can deliver.

!

Solar and battery

Space and labelling for an inverter or battery connection. See solar and battery ready boards.

!

Surge protection

Worth considering with expensive inverters and appliances. See surge protection.

!

Load management

Some EV chargers can reduce charging when the house is busy, which can avoid a supply upgrade.

Supply limits

Board versus supply.

A new switchboard gives you space and modern protection. It doesn't, on its own, increase the power available from the street. That is set by the network connection, the service fuse and the consumer mains cable. If your combined load is more than the supply can sensibly carry, the options are to manage the load or apply to Ausgrid for a supply upgrade, which involves an Accredited Service Provider for the network side. Our supply capacity check page explains how we work it out.

Three-phase is not automatically the answer. It suits some larger homes and heavy loads, but many single-phase houses electrify comfortably.

The job

How a board replacement runs.

Power is off for most of a day. We remove the old board (asbestos-backed panels are handled with the right precautions), fit the new enclosure, reconnect and label each circuit, test everything to AS/NZS 3000 and issue a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work. Existing circuits that fail insulation testing are flagged so you know before the new appliances arrive.

See our new switchboard with RCBOs in Rozelle and the switchboard upgrade cost guide.

Questions

Common questions.

Do I need a new switchboard to go all-electric?

Not always, but most older boards lack the space or protection for several heavy new circuits. We check yours first.

Will a new switchboard give me more power?

No. It gives you space and safer protection. Available power depends on your supply from Ausgrid.

Should I install the board before buying appliances?

Ideally plan the board first, so every future circuit has a place and cables are sized correctly.

How long is the power off?

Usually most of a working day for a standard house. We confirm timing in the quote.

What brands of switchboard do you fit?

We choose switchgear to suit the job and the space, and can talk you through the options. For background, see our Hager and Clipsal switchboard pages.
