A surge protection device (SPD) in the switchboard limits voltage spikes on the incoming supply before they reach the circuits in the house. Plug-in surge power boards do a similar job at a single outlet. They work best together: the switchboard device handles larger surges arriving from outside, and the power board protects a TV, computer or modem from what is left.
Surges come from lightning striking near power or phone lines, from faults on the network and from large equipment switching on and off. An SPD reduces the damage these can do. It will not protect against a direct lightning strike on the house, and phone, data and antenna cables that enter the building can carry a surge around it, which is why some sensitive equipment is better protected on those lines too.
A switchboard SPD needs a spare space on the DIN rail and a sound earth connection to work properly. Older boards may need tidying or an upgrade to fit one. Most devices have an indicator window that shows when the protective part has worn out after absorbing surges, so it is worth looking at it now and then and after a big storm.
