Clipsal switchboard installation

Clipsal is the name most Australians recognise on a light switch, and the same brand makes switchboard enclosures, circuit breakers, safety switches (RCDs), RCBOs and surge protection. We install and upgrade Clipsal switchboards across the Inner West and Sydney.

Clipsal

Clipsal Switchboard installation.

A switchboard is where your home's power is split into circuits, and where each circuit gets its protection: a circuit breaker against overload and short circuit, and a safety switch against earth leakage that can electrocute someone. Clipsal, part of the Schneider Electric group, makes all of these parts for Australian homes, so a whole board can be built from one family of equipment.

Most people asking for a Clipsal board fall into two groups: homeowners replacing an old ceramic fuse board, and people who already have Clipsal gear and want new circuits or RCBOs that match. Builders and renovators also tend to ask for it because it's easy to source and familiar to the next electrician who opens the board.

Blue Link Electrical is a licensed electrician based in Hurlstone Park (NSW Contractor Licence 332956C). We plan the board around the circuits you actually have, install it to AS/NZS 3000 and test every circuit before we leave.

Know your model

What goes into a Clipsal board.

A Clipsal switchboard is really a set of parts: an enclosure (flush-mounted into the wall or surface-mounted), a main switch, circuit breakers, RCDs or RCBOs, and optional extras such as a surge protection device. Enclosures come in different sizes, measured by how many module spaces they hold. We size the enclosure for your circuits now plus spare room, because a board that's full on day one makes the next job harder.

Clipsal's range changes over time, and not every part fits every chassis, so we pick compatible components rather than mixing whatever is on the shelf. If you've been quoted a specific Clipsal range, tell us; otherwise we'll recommend components that suit the board and explain why. We don't sell the gear as a product; it's supplied as part of the installation.

Before we install

What the installation needs.

!

Space on the wall

The new enclosure has to fit where the old board was, or close to it, with enough room around it to work on safely. Meter boxes in older terraces are often tight.

!

Circuit count

We count lights, power, air conditioning, cooking, hot water and any planned loads such as an EV charger, then size the board with spare spaces.

!

Protection for every circuit

Safety switch protection is planned for the final circuits, either RCDs grouping several circuits or RCBOs on each one.

!

Earthing and wiring condition

A new board relies on a sound main earth and healthy cabling. We check insulation on existing circuits, because old faults show up the moment RCD protection is added.

!

Ausgrid coordination

Some upgrades need the supply disconnected at the service fuse or meter. Where that's required, we arrange it as part of the job.

How it works

How we install it.

1. Look and quote. We inspect the board, meter area and circuits, ask what you plan to add, and give a written quote that lists the protection on each circuit.

2. Change-over. Power is isolated, the old board comes out and the Clipsal enclosure goes in. Circuits are reconnected, labelled and fitted with their new breakers and RCD or RCBO protection.

3. Testing. Each circuit is tested for insulation resistance, polarity and earth continuity, and every safety switch is trip-tested. Faults found here are explained before power goes back on.

4. Paperwork. You get a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) and a labelled board. See our switchboard upgrade cost guide for what affects price.

Common problems

Common Clipsal problems.

!

Safety switch tripping

Usually an appliance or a circuit with an earth leakage fault rather than a faulty switch. See Clipsal safety switch tripping.

!

No room for a new circuit

Older Clipsal boards are often full. Sometimes RCBOs free up space; sometimes a larger enclosure is the cleaner answer.

!

Mixed or unlabelled parts

Boards that have been added to over the years can have mismatched breakers and no labels. We sort out what's compatible and label every circuit.

!

Old circuits failing tests

Adding RCD protection exposes existing wiring faults. We find the circuit at fault rather than leaving protection off.

Questions

Clipsal Switchboard: common questions.

Can you add RCBOs to my existing Clipsal board?

Often, if the chassis and enclosure have space and the parts are compatible. If the board is old or full, replacing it can work out simpler.

Is Clipsal better than other switchboard brands?

Clipsal is a well-known, widely available brand, but Hager, NHP, ABB and others make good equipment too. What matters more is a well-planned, correctly protected board.

How long does a Clipsal switchboard upgrade take?

A typical house board is usually done in a day, with the power off for part of it. We'll tell you how long to expect when we quote.

Do I need surge protection on the new board?

It's optional but worth considering. A surge protection device can be fitted in the board; read is surge protection worth it.

Do you work for Clipsal?

No. We're a licensed electrician (NSW 332956C) who installs Clipsal switchboards and parts. We're not affiliated with Clipsal or Schneider Electric; product warranty sits with the manufacturer.
