Gas heater to split system: the electrical side

Plenty of Inner West homes still heat the living room with a gas wall furnace or a bayonet-point space heater. Reverse-cycle split systems heat efficiently in a Sydney winter and cool in summer, but every head you add is another load on the switchboard.

Ring 0421 772 661 if you're planning the swap. Send the air conditioner sizes and a photo of your switchboard and we can tell you what the wiring involves.

Splitting the work

Three trades, three jobs.

Removing a gas heater and fitting a split system involves separate licensed trades. A licensed gasfitter disconnects the heater and caps or removes the gas point. A licensed refrigeration technician (holding the refrigerant handling licence) mounts the indoor and outdoor units, runs the refrigerant pipework and commissions the system. We supply the power: a circuit from the switchboard, an isolator at the outdoor unit and the final electrical connection.

Many air conditioning installers bring their own electrician. If yours doesn't, or you want your own electrician to look after the switchboard, we can work in with them. We don't handle refrigerant or gas.

Circuits

What each split system needs.

Small wall-hung units are sometimes allowed on a shared circuit, but larger units, and anything replacing a main heating source, are usually best on their own dedicated circuit. The manufacturer's installation manual states the circuit size and protection. An outdoor isolating switch near the condenser lets technicians work on it safely. Our air conditioner dedicated circuit guide explains when a dedicated circuit is needed.

If you're replacing several gas heaters, or heating the whole house, compare options first. Our split system vs ducted comparison covers how the electrical demands differ.

!

Dedicated circuit

Sized to the unit's rating plate and the cable length from the board.

!

Outdoor isolator

Weatherproof, within reach of the outdoor unit, for safe servicing.

!

RCBO protection

Each circuit protected at the switchboard. See RCD vs RCBO.

!

Cable route

Through the roof space or under the floor to the condenser position, kept clear of the refrigerant line work.

Winter load

Heating is the peak.

In a gas house, a cold evening barely registers on the electrical supply. Swap to reverse-cycle and that same evening has two or three heads running while someone cooks and the hot water reheats. If you are also converting the cooktop to induction or adding an EV charger, winter evenings are when your supply works hardest.

We check the main switch and supply against the realistic combined load. On older boards with ceramic fuses or no spare spaces, a switchboard upgrade usually comes first. See our supply capacity guide for how we assess it.

Finishing up

Testing and paperwork.

Once the circuit is in and the refrigeration technician has commissioned the unit, our wiring is tested to AS/NZS 3000 and you receive a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work for the electrical part of the job. The old gas heater's power point, if it had one, can be kept as a general outlet or removed neatly.

Blue Link Electrical is based in Hurlstone Park and works across the Inner West and Sydney under NSW Contractor Licence 332956C.

Questions

Common questions.

Can you install the whole split system?

We do the electrical work only. The units and refrigerant pipework must be installed by a licensed refrigeration technician.

Who removes the gas heater?

A licensed gasfitter must disconnect it and make the gas point safe.

Does every split system need its own circuit?

Not always for small units, but larger units usually do. The manufacturer's manual is the starting point and we follow it.

Will my switchboard cope with several units?

That depends on space on the board and your supply. We check both before quoting and tell you if an upgrade is needed.

Are there incentives for replacing gas heating?

Some programs have offered incentives for efficient heating. Check current eligibility on official government websites.
