Birchgrove is at the tip of the Balmain peninsula in the Inner West Council area, on the Ausgrid network. It is one of Sydney's oldest residential areas: Victorian terraces and workers' cottages, sandstone houses, converted warehouses, and harbourfront homes looking across to Woolwich and the bridge.

Waterfront properties at the end of the peninsula face salt air and damp in lower levels, which affects outdoor fittings, garage power and anything near the water. Where homes have boatsheds, jetties or harbour-side gardens, outdoor circuits need suitable enclosures and RCD protection, and corroded fittings should be replaced before they fail.

Wiring in old terraces

Terraces are narrow and deep, with brick party walls and limited roof space, so running new cable takes planning. Many still have sections of very old wiring alongside later additions. When a renovation is under way, rewiring the whole house is usually more practical than patching.

Meter boxes are often on the front facade or tucked into a hallway, and a crowded switchboard is common. Upgrading it with RCBOs gives individual protection for each circuit.
