A pendant is often the light people notice first in a room, so it's worth hanging well: centred where it should be, at a height that works, and fixed firmly enough that a heavy glass or metal shade isn't relying on a plasterboard clip.
Ring 0421 772 661 with the fitting's details or a link to it. We'll quote in writing and can install pendants you've bought yourself.
Replacing an existing ceiling light with a single pendant in the same spot is usually simple. Most pendant jobs involve a bit more: moving the light point so it sits over a dining table or island bench rather than the middle of the room, adding several pendants in a row, or running new switching so the pendants work separately from the downlights.
Weight is the first thing we check. Lightweight shades can hang from a standard ceiling rose, but heavier fittings and multi-light clusters need fixing to a ceiling joist or a timber noggin installed between joists. In older houses that means getting into the roof space; where there's a room above, we work out the fixing from below. Hardwired light fittings in NSW are installed by a licensed electrician, and plug-in pendants hung on hooks still need a sensible cable route and power point.
These are the requests we see most, each with its own layout question.
Two or three pendants spaced evenly along the bench, often with a kitchen renovation. Linear LED pendants are popular too.
Centred on the table rather than the room, which often means relocating the light point and adding a dimmer.
Long drops in double-height spaces. Access equipment and the drop length need planning before the day.
Pendants hung either side of the bed in place of lamps, each with its own switch.
A statement fitting in a tall terrace hallway, hung clear of the door swing and head height.
Sloped-ceiling adaptors or canopies so the pendant hangs plumb.
Hanging height depends on what sits below the pendant, the ceiling height and the size of the shade. Over a bench you want the light low enough to be useful without blocking sight lines; over a table, low enough to feel intimate but clear of heads when people stand. Our pendant light height guide has practical starting points.
Many pendants have adjustable cords, but some are shortened by cutting and re-terminating the cable. We set the drop with you on the day rather than guessing. You can see examples in our pendant lighting job in Glebe and feature pendant in Lilyfield.
Replacing one light with one pendant in the same position costs least. Moving the light point, adding new points for several pendants, or adding separate switching all add time. Fixing a heavy fitting where there's no roof access, ornate plaster ceilings in Victorian terraces that need careful handling around the original rose, and very high ceilings that need a taller ladder or scaffold all move the price. Assembling elaborate multi-arm fittings is part of the job and we factor it into the quote.
We isolate the circuit, fix the mounting, connect and earth the fitting where it requires an earth, then test the circuit and switching. Where a CCEW is required for the work, we lodge it and you receive a copy.
Yes. Check it's designed for Australian mains supply and send us the product details beforehand so we can confirm weight, mounting and any driver or dimming requirements.
Yes. We run a new cable from an existing lighting circuit to the new position and add switching to suit.
If the globe or integrated LED is dimmable and the dimmer suits it. See our dimmer switch installation page.
Plasterboard alone isn't. We fix heavy fittings to a joist or a noggin installed between joists so the weight goes into the ceiling structure.
Usually. Many decorative plaster roses can stay, with the new fitting mounted through or beneath them. We'll check its condition first.
