Pendant Lights: Installation, Heights Over Islands and Tables

Guides › Upgrades

Short answer: A common rule of thumb is to hang pendants about 75 to 90 cm above a kitchen island or dining table (measured from the benchtop or table to the bottom of the shade), and high enough in walkways that people can walk under them comfortably. Space multiple pendants evenly and keep them in from the bench ends. Installing or moving a pendant is electrical work, so you need a licensed electrician, and heavy fittings need proper ceiling support.

Pendant lights can make a kitchen island or dining table the centrepiece of a room, but only if they’re hung at the right height and spacing. Hang them too high and they look lost. Too low and you’re ducking around them. Here’s how to get it right, and what installation involves.

The heights below are common design guidelines, not rules. Fitting size, ceiling height and how you use the space all matter, so mock it up before you commit.

Height guide

Location Common starting point
Over a kitchen island or bench About 75 to 90 cm from benchtop to the bottom of the pendant
Over a dining table About 75 to 90 cm from tabletop to the bottom of the pendant
Living rooms and hallways (walk-under) High enough for the tallest person in the house to pass easily, often above about 2.1 m from the floor
Bedside pendants Around bedside-table lamp height, to the side of the bed
Double-height or raked ceilings Set by eye, often lower than you think, so the light reaches the task

Tip: Sit at the table or stand at the island with a helper holding the pendant (or a cardboard cut-out) at different heights. You should be able to see across the room without the shade blocking faces.

Spacing multiple pendants

  • Two or three pendants over an island is common; odd numbers often look balanced.
  • Spacing: a common approach is to divide the island length so the gaps between pendants are equal, keeping the end pendants about 15 to 30 cm in from the ends of the bench.
  • Size: bigger shades need more space between them. Smaller pendants can be grouped closer.
  • Line them up with the bench, not the ceiling joists. Your electrician can work around joists.

Choosing the right pendant

Light output and colour

Pendants over a bench need to light the work surface, not just look good. Check:

  • lumens (brightness), especially for task areas
  • colour temperature: warm white (around 2700K to 3000K) suits dining; neutral white can suit kitchens
  • glare: open-bottom shades can dazzle when hung low

Our LED downlight buying guide explains lumens and colour temperature.

Dimming

Dimmable pendants on a separate switch let you switch from task lighting to mood lighting. The dimmer must match the globe or driver, or you’ll get buzzing and flicker. See dimmer switch buzzing.

Weight and mounting

Heavy glass or metal pendants need a solid fixing to the ceiling structure, not just plasterboard. Check the manufacturer’s installation requirements.

What installation involves

  1. Plan positions with your electrician, before the ceiling is closed in if you’re renovating.
  2. Run cabling from the switch to each position.
  3. Fix ceiling support for the fittings.
  4. Install and adjust the drop length on the day.
  5. Test and lodge the compliance certificate.

Replacing a ceiling light with a pendant, adding a new pendant or moving one is electrical wiring work. In NSW, it must be done by a licensed electrician, who must lodge a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work, as explained by the NSW Government.

Adjusting the drop

Many pendants have adjustable cords or cables. Your electrician can set a provisional height, then fine-tune it with you on the day. Bring the cardboard mock-up height you liked.

Renovation tips

  • Plan pendants with the island design. Island size and position decide the pendant positions.
  • Separate switching for pendants, downlights and under-cabinet lights gives you flexibility.
  • Consider smart control for scenes; see smart home wiring.
  • High ceilings in terraces look great with pendants, but check drop lengths are available.

Frequently asked questions

How high should pendant lights be above a kitchen island?

A common guideline is about 75 to 90 cm from the benchtop to the bottom of the pendant. Adjust for the fitting’s size and the people using the space.

How far apart should pendant lights be?

Space them evenly along the island, with the end pendants about 15 to 30 cm in from the ends of the bench. Larger shades need more space.

Can I install a pendant light myself?

No. In NSW, installing or moving a hardwired light is electrical work that needs a licensed electrician.

Can pendant lights be dimmed?

Many can, if the globes or drivers are dimmable and matched to a compatible dimmer.
