Electrical work for Paddington terraces and businesses

Paddington's terraces, many with cast-iron lace balconies, step down the hills from Oxford Street towards Rushcutters Bay. Victoria Barracks fills a long stretch of Oxford Street, Juniper Hall is one of Sydney's oldest surviving houses, the Paddington Reservoir Gardens open onto Oxford Street, and the Saturday markets run at the Uniting Church. Five Ways, where Glenmore Road meets Broughton and Heeley Streets, has its own small village of cafes and shops. Most of the suburb is in a heritage conservation area, split between Woollahra Council and the City of Sydney.

Terrace switchboards

In a Paddington terrace, the meter and fuses are usually on the hallway wall or on the front facade, squeezed into a narrow space. Many boards still have rewireable fuses and no RCD protection, and some feed a rear extension through cable that was never sized for it. A switchboard upgrade is normally the first job, with every circuit labelled and protected. We work within the existing location wherever possible so the hallway joinery is left alone. Read more on our terrace house electrician page. Where the incoming supply has to change, it is level 1 and 2 work arranged through accredited partners.

Rewiring without damaging heritage fabric

Terraces are narrow, with tight roof spaces and lath-and-plaster walls. We run new cable through roof voids, under floors and up existing chases, and open plaster only as a last resort. That lets us do rewiring room by room while you live in the house. For period rooms, we fit pendants on ceiling roses, wall lights and dimmers rather than rows of downlights, and our heritage electrical page explains the approach.

Rear extensions and courtyards

Many terraces have a glazed kitchen and living extension at the back. We plan circuits for cooking appliances, air conditioning, ceiling fans and data points with your builder, then light the courtyard with low-glare outdoor fittings. Buying a terrace? Our pre-purchase inspection tells you what you are taking on.

Oxford Street and Five Ways businesses

Galleries, boutiques, cafes and offices need lighting that shows off the space and power that does not trip. We handle shop fit-outs, track and display lighting, commercial switchboards, kitchen circuits, exit lighting and test and tag. After-hours work is for emergencies only.

Paddington electrician FAQs

Do I need council approval for electrical work in a Paddington terrace?

Internal electrical work usually does not need heritage approval, but changes to the street facade can. We keep visible changes to a minimum and tell you if anything might need checking with council.

Can you rewire a terrace without chasing the plaster?

Mostly, yes. We use the roof space, subfloor and existing chases, and only open lath-and-plaster walls when there is no other way, after talking it through with you.

Can the switchboard stay in the hallway?

Usually. We can fit a modern board in the same position. If the meter or supply has to move, that is level 1 and 2 work arranged through accredited partners.

What lighting suits a Victorian terrace?

Pendants on the original ceiling roses, wall lights and dimmers tend to suit period rooms better than lots of downlights. We help you choose fittings that respect the ceilings.

Do you work for galleries and shops on Oxford Street?

Yes. We do track and display lighting, shop fit-outs, commercial switchboards, exit lighting and test and tag.

Is there an emergency electrician for Paddington?

Yes, 24/7 for genuine emergencies. Call 02 9069 1870.

What customers wrote

Matt arrived on time and was very helpful and polite. He and his colleague fixed my bathroom light switch and installed 2x sockets just as I wanted and ensured everywhere was left tidy. Highly recommended and I will be using his services again.
