Data point installation in the Inner West

Wi-Fi is fine for phones. For a work computer, a gaming console, a smart TV or a Wi-Fi access point at the far end of a long terrace, a wired data point is faster and far more reliable. We install Cat6 ethernet points in Inner West homes, offices and businesses, and across Sydney.

Ring 0421 772 661 and tell us which rooms need a connection and where your NBN box and modem sit.

Who can do it

Data cabling is regulated work

In Australia, cabling that connects to the telecommunications network has to be installed by a registered cabler and follow the ACMA cabling rules (AS/CA S009). That covers ethernet points wired back to your NBN connection. Blue Link holds ACMA cabling registration A056733, and as licensed electricians we can do the power side of the job too, such as a power point for an access point or a network cabinet.

Planning

Where the points should go

The useful question isn't how many points, it's where the cables meet. Every data point is a single cable run back to one central spot, usually near the NBN connection box, where a switch connects them all. In a narrow Inner West terrace that spot might be under the stairs or in a hall cupboard; in a newer house it might be the garage or laundry.

We'll suggest points for the rooms that really need them, such as a study, a lounge with a TV and console, and a ceiling point for a Wi-Fi access point to cover the rear of the house, and leave spare capacity for later.

!

Cat6 cable

Supports gigabit speeds comfortably and suits PoE access points and cameras.

!

Wall plates

Flush plates beside the power points, matched to your existing switches where possible.

!

Ceiling points

For Wi-Fi access points, cabled so one run supplies both data and power (PoE).

!

Central termination

Runs terminated on a patch panel or wall box near the NBN connection.

!

Testing

Each run tested end to end, with the result recorded.

!

Labelling

Both ends numbered so you know which plate is which.

Older homes

Getting cable through brick and plaster

Double-brick walls, lath-and-plaster ceilings and timber floors make cable routes the main skill in Inner West houses. We use the roof space and subfloor wherever we can, drop cables inside existing wall cavities, and only chase a wall when there's no other path. Data cable is kept separated from power cables as the cabling rules require, which also avoids interference.

Questions

Common questions.

Is Cat6 worth it over Cat5e?

For new points, yes. The cost difference is small, and Cat6 handles gigabit speeds with more headroom and runs PoE devices well.

Do data points need an ACMA registered cabler?

Yes. Cabling connected to the telecommunications network must be done by a registered cabler. Blue Link's registration number is A056733.

Do you install data cabling for offices and businesses?

Yes. We cable offices, shops, studios and other business premises as well as homes: data points, patch panels and network cabinets, tested and labelled, with the power side done by a licensed electrician.

Can you run a data point to a Wi-Fi access point on the ceiling?

Yes. One Cat6 cable can carry both data and power (PoE) to a ceiling access point, which is often the best fix for weak Wi-Fi at the back of a house.

Where should the cables all end up?

At one central point near the NBN connection box, where a switch or router connects them. We help you pick a spot with power and ventilation.

Do you install data points outside the Inner West?

Yes. We install data points across Sydney, with the Inner West as our main area.
