CCTV installation

A CCTV system is only useful if the cameras see faces and number plates where it matters, record reliably and are easy to check on your phone. That comes down to planning, cabling and setup as much as the cameras themselves.

Ring 0421 772 661 to talk through your property. Installing CCTV in NSW is licensed security work: Blue Link holds NSW Security Licence S00014414 as well as Electrical Contractor Licence 332956C.

Planning

Start with what you need to see

Before choosing cameras we walk the property and agree what each one is for. A camera covering the front door to identify visitors needs a different position and lens from one giving an overview of a backyard. Wide-angle cameras show more area but less detail at distance, so a driveway or rear lane often needs a dedicated camera rather than relying on a single wide view.

Privacy is part of planning. Cameras should cover your property, not look into neighbours' yards or windows, and audio recording has its own legal considerations. We aim cameras to minimise that, and can apply privacy masking on many systems. Our security camera installation guide covers placement in more depth.

Choices

Wired, wireless and recording

Most of what we install is wired IP cameras running on power over Ethernet (PoE): one network cable carries both power and video back to a network video recorder (NVR). Wired systems avoid Wi-Fi dropouts and battery charging. Wi-Fi and battery cameras suit renters or spots where cabling is impossible, with trade-offs explained in PoE vs Wi-Fi security cameras.

Recording can be local on an NVR, in the cloud, or both; NVR vs cloud recording sets out the differences. We install systems including Hikvision, UniFi Protect and Reolink, as an independent installer rather than for any one brand.

Typical jobs

What a CCTV job usually looks like

Requests generally fall into these groups. You can see two real examples in our Camperdown CCTV job and Croydon CCTV job.

!

Front and back of house

Two to four cameras covering entries, side passage and backyard, recording to an NVR inside.

!

Terraces and rear lanes

Cameras over the rear gate or garage on the lane, where cable runs are tight and roof access is limited.

!

Driveways and carports

Cameras positioned for vehicles and number plates, often paired with a sensor light for night footage.

!

Shops and small offices

Coverage of counters, entries and stock areas, with recorder placement that's secure.

!

Upgrading old analogue systems

Replacing grainy older cameras, sometimes reusing cable routes where practical.

!

Offline cameras

Cameras that keep dropping out are often a power, cable or network issue. See PoE camera no power.

Price and process

What affects the quote

Cost depends on the number of cameras, the camera and recorder hardware, storage capacity, and above all how hard the cable runs are. Single-storey houses with open roof space are straightforward. Inner West terraces with tight roof voids, masonry party walls and no eaves take longer, as do two-storey facades that need ladders or access equipment.

We quote in writing after the site visit. Installation covers running and terminating network cable, mounting cameras on suitable bases, sealing entry points, setting up the recorder and network, adjusting angles and motion zones, and setting up app access on your phone. We walk you through finding and exporting footage before we leave. Any electrical work, such as a new power point for the recorder, is tested and covered by a CCEW where required.

Questions

Common questions.

Do CCTV installers need a licence in NSW?

Yes. Installing CCTV is licensed security work in NSW. Blue Link holds NSW Security Licence S00014414.

How many cameras does a typical house need?

Many houses are well covered with two to four, depending on entries, side access and any lane or driveway. We plan the number around what you need to see.

Can I watch my cameras on my phone?

Yes. We set up the app on your phone during handover and check remote viewing works.

Can my camera point at the street or neighbour's place?

Cameras should focus on your own property. Some street view at an entry is often unavoidable, but we aim to minimise it and can apply privacy masking.

Do you install cameras I've already bought?

Often, yes. Send us the model details first so we can check they suit the locations and mounting.
