An intercom lets you see or speak to whoever is at the gate or front door before you open it, and with the right system, release the gate from inside or from your phone. We install and wire intercoms for houses, terraces with front gates and small apartment blocks.
Ring 0421 772 661 and tell us about the entry: house door, front gate, or shared building entrance. Blue Link holds NSW Electrical Contractor Licence 332956C and NSW Security Licence S00014414.
Intercoms that control access to a property, especially those linked to electric locks or gate releases, fall within security work in NSW. That's on top of the electrical licence needed for the power supply. Blue Link holds both, so the same person can run the power, the cabling, the door hardware wiring and the system setup.
We're an independent installer. We wire and set up intercoms from a range of manufacturers but don't sell on behalf of any of them. If you're still choosing between a doorbell camera and a full intercom, our video doorbell vs video intercom comparison and our video doorbell and intercom installation guide are good starting points.
Audio-only intercoms are simple and still useful where you just need to talk to visitors. Video intercoms add a camera at the door station and a screen inside. Many video systems use a 2-wire bus, which is handy when replacing an old intercom because the existing pair of cables can often be reused. IP intercoms run over network cable, usually with power over Ethernet, and integrate more easily with phone apps, multiple screens and other network devices.
Brands vary in how they handle app access, multiple apartments and lock control. We install systems such as 2N, Aiphone, Comelit and Hikvision, and can advise on which approach suits your property.
Most of our intercom work falls into one of these categories.
A door station at the street gate with a screen inside. The cable run between them, often under a path or garden, is the main planning item.
Wiring an electric strike or magnetic lock so the gate or door opens from the monitor or app, with a suitable power supply.
Upgrading a tired audio unit to video, reusing existing cables where the new system allows.
Entry panels for blocks of units, each apartment with its own monitor. Strata approval and access to common areas are arranged first.
Adding screens upstairs or in a home office, or setting up phone notifications.
Units with no power, no picture or no audio. See intercom no power for common causes.
The distance and route between gate and house matters most. If there's no existing cable or conduit, a run under paving or through a garden adds time. Lock hardware, the number of indoor monitors, whether you want app access, and the building type (a freestanding house versus a strata block with shared risers) all affect the quote. Terraces with a front gate right on the street are usually short runs; larger blocks with long driveways are not.
We survey the entry, confirm the system and cable route, and quote in writing. On install day we run and terminate cabling, mount the door station and monitors, wire locks and power supplies, then test calls, video, lock release and app connection with you. Any electrical work needing a CCEW is lodged and copied to you.
Intercoms that control access are security work, and the power side is electrical work. Blue Link holds NSW Security Licence S00014414 and Electrical Contractor Licence 332956C.
Often, if the new system is a 2-wire type and the existing cable is in good condition. We test the cable before relying on it.
Yes, if the gate has, or can be fitted with, an electric strike, magnetic lock or a motor controller that accepts a release signal.
Many video intercoms offer app access. It depends on the system and a reliable network connection at the door station or monitor.
Yes, for small strata blocks. The owners corporation needs to approve work in common areas before we start.
