2N makes IP intercoms and access units that are common at apartment building entries, offices and higher-end homes. We install 2N door stations, run the network cabling and wire the door release.

2N is a European manufacturer, now part of Axis Communications, that specialises in network (IP) intercoms. Instead of a dedicated intercom wiring system, a 2N door station connects to a data network, usually powered over the same cable using Power over Ethernet (PoE). Calls can go to indoor answering units, phones running an app, or other compatible devices.
That network approach makes 2N a strong choice for strata buildings and commercial entries, where a single entry panel may serve many apartments or tenants and needs to integrate with access control. It also works well in houses where there's already good data cabling and a decent network.
Blue Link Electrical is a licensed electrician based in Hurlstone Park, with NSW Electrical Contractor Licence 332956C and NSW Security Licence S00014414 for security work such as intercoms and access control. We install 2N systems across the Inner West and Sydney.
2N's range spans compact single-button door stations for houses, modular units that can be built up with keypads, card readers and extra buttons, and larger directory-style panels for buildings. Options and licensing vary between models, so match the unit to how many residences it needs to call and whether you want keypad or card entry.
Because 2N runs on the network, the quality of the network matters. A PoE switch with enough power budget, a sensible IP addressing plan and a reliable link to the indoor units or apps are part of the job. For strata, it's worth agreeing early who manages the network and the user list once the system is handed over.
A data cable from the door station back to a network switch, ideally run in conduit at the entry. See data cabling.
Most 2N units are powered over the network cable from a PoE switch or injector. Larger configurations may need more power than a basic injector provides.
An electric strike or magnetic lock, its own power supply and wiring to the intercom's relay or an access controller.
Flush or surface mounting suited to the wall material, at a height that works for visitors and wheelchair users, protected from direct rain where possible.
Indoor units in each home or office, or app answering on phones, each needing network access.
Works on common property usually need owners corporation approval before we start.
1. Site survey. We check the entry door and frame, cable routes back to the comms room, the existing network and how many residences or users need to be called. You get a written quote.
2. Cabling and power. We run data cabling to the door station and indoor units, install or confirm the PoE switch, and wire power for the door release hardware.
3. Mount and configure. The door station and indoor units are mounted, addressed on the network and configured with the directory, call routing and door release timing.
4. Test. Every call path is tested, the door releases reliably and closes securely, and any electrical work is tested and certified. Our intercom installation guide explains more.
Usually a network or PoE issue: a failed switch port, injector or cable. See intercom no power.
Often the strike's power supply, a misaligned strike, or a door under pressure from the closer, rather than the intercom.
App or network settings, firewall rules or an expired account. The door station itself is often fine.
Network congestion, a damaged cable or the unit exposed to harsh backlight. We test the link and adjust the setup.
Yes, smaller 2N door stations suit houses, especially those with existing data cabling. It's a more network-focused option than a basic video doorbell.
Yes, through a relay that controls an electric strike or lock. The lock hardware needs its own suitable power supply.
Most 2N units are designed for PoE, which keeps it to one cable. Where the unit needs more power, a higher-rated PoE source is used.
Often, though old buildings may need new cabling to each apartment. We'll survey the building and explain the options to the owners corporation.
