Intercom has no power?

When an intercom goes dead, the indoor screen, the door station or both have usually lost their power supply. Most home intercoms run from a dedicated power supply or plugpack, so that's where we start.

Try the checks below. If it's still dead, call 0421 772 661 and we'll test the supply and the cabling between the units.

Safety first

Before you do anything.

Don't remove the indoor monitor or the door station from the wall, and don't open any power supply or junction box. If you notice heat, burning smells or water around the intercom or its power supply, switch off at the main switch if it's safe and call us. Call 000 if there's fire or injury.

In apartment buildings, the main intercom system is usually managed by strata or the building manager. Don't attempt anything on shared equipment in common areas.

Quick checks

Safe things you can check yourself.

!

Is it your unit or the whole building?

In a block of units, ask a neighbour if their intercom works. If it doesn't, the fault is in the building system and should be reported to the strata manager or building manager.

!

Find the power supply

Home intercoms are often powered from a plugpack or a small supply near the indoor monitor, in a cupboard or at the switchboard. Check any plugpack is in and switched on.

!

Check the switchboard

Look for a tripped breaker or safety switch. Reset it once; if it trips again, leave it off and call an electrician.

!

Check the app, if there is one

Some intercoms connect to Wi-Fi or an app. If the monitor has power but the app shows offline, it's a network issue rather than power. Check your router and the app.

!

Restart at the plug

If the intercom has a plug-in supply, switch it off at the power point, wait briefly and switch back on. Check the result on the monitor.

Causes

What usually causes it.

Failed power supply or plugpack. Intercom power supplies run constantly and do fail over time, often after a storm or surge. A dead supply takes out the monitor and door station together.

Tripped circuit. If the intercom is on a circuit that has tripped, it stays off until reset. Repeated tripping points to a fault in the intercom supply, another device on that circuit, or the wiring.

Cabling damage. Cable between the gate or door station and the house can be damaged by garden work, water in an underground conduit, or building work. The indoor unit may light up but the door station stays dead, or vice versa.

Device faults. If power reaches both units correctly and one still won't start, the monitor or door station has likely failed. That's handled through the manufacturer or supplier's warranty; we'll check the power and cabling side first.

When to call

When it needs an electrician.

Call us if the supply has failed, the intercom circuit trips, the door station is dead while the indoor unit works, or cabling to a gate or front door has been damaged.

We hold an NSW Security Licence (S00014414) and Electrical Contractor Licence (332956C), so we can repair supplies, run new cable and replace intercoms. Read our video doorbell and intercom guide, or see our intercom services.

Questions

Common questions

Why is my intercom screen blank?

Usually the power supply has failed or its circuit has tripped. Check any plugpack and the switchboard first.

The indoor unit works but the gate station doesn't. Why?

The cable between them is likely damaged, or the door station has failed. Testing the cable tells us which.

Can a storm damage an intercom?

Yes. Power surges and water in outdoor cabling are common causes of intercom failure after storms.

Our apartment intercom isn't working. Can you fix it?

Building intercom systems are usually the responsibility of strata. Report it to the building manager, who can arrange the repair.

Can you replace an old intercom with a video model?

Often, yes. Depending on the existing cabling we may be able to reuse it or we may need to run new cable.
