The range

Fittings we put up

Most light fitting jobs are replacements: an old fitting comes down and a new one goes up on the same point. Others need a new light point, a new switch, or a change in how the room's lighting is circuited. We handle both, and tell you which you're dealing with before work starts.

!

Ceiling lights and oysters

Straight swaps of old fittings, often the quickest way to freshen a room.

!

Pendants

Single drops and clusters over benches and dining tables. Our pendant height guide helps with positioning.

!

Chandeliers and heavy fittings

Mounted to structure rather than plaster, with the weight properly supported.

!

Wall lights

New wall points usually mean chasing cable into the wall, so timing with painting matters.

!

Battens and utility lights

Laundries, garages, sheds and storerooms.

!

Outdoor fittings

Weather-rated fittings on verandahs, entries and gardens. See outdoor lighting.

Doing it properly

What a good installation involves

Fixing is the part people underestimate. Plaster alone isn't designed to carry a heavy fitting, so anything with real weight is anchored to a joist or to a timber noggin added between joists. Lath-and-plaster ceilings in older houses need extra care, because they can crack or let go when drilled carelessly.

Electrically, each fitting is terminated in a way that suits it: correct connection of earth on metal fittings, appropriate enclosure of the terminations, and heat clearance where the fitting or its driver needs it. LED fittings with separate drivers need the driver located where it can be accessed and won't overheat. If the fitting will be on a dimmer, we check the fitting and dimmer are compatible, because a mismatch is the usual cause of flicker and buzzing (see dimmer switch buzzing).

Once the fitting is up, we test the circuit, confirm it switches and dims correctly, and clean up. New circuits or light points are covered by a CCEW where the work requires one.

Inner West ceilings

High ceilings, roses and old wiring

Victorian terraces in Annandale, Glebe and Balmain often have high ceilings with decorative plaster roses, while Federation and inter-war homes in Hurlstone Park, Ashfield and Summer Hill commonly have pressed metal or lath-and-plaster ceilings. These are worth protecting, and they shape how a fitting can be mounted. A heavy pendant hung through an ornamental rose, for example, needs fixing above it, not into it.

Taking down an old fitting sometimes reveals tired cable with brittle insulation, or a light point with no earth. We'll show you what we find and explain options rather than connecting a new fitting to a cable that shouldn't stay in service. Our guide to old wiring in Inner West homes covers this.

Pricing

What affects the price

The number of fittings, how complex each one is to assemble (some chandeliers come in dozens of pieces), ceiling height and the need for a platform ladder, whether a fixing point has to be added in the ceiling, and whether new light points, switches or circuits are involved. Several fittings in one visit are more efficient than separate trips. Downlights are a separate job; see our LED downlight installation page.

Questions

Common questions.

Can I buy my own light fittings?

Yes. Most of our light fitting jobs use fittings the customer has chosen. Check they're suitable for Australian use and send us the details before the visit.

Can you hang a heavy chandelier on a plaster ceiling?

Yes, but it's fixed to the ceiling structure, not the plaster alone. If there's no joist in the right place we add a support.

Do I need a new light point for a wall light?

Usually, unless one already exists. That involves running cable to the new position and is best done before painting.

Why does my new LED fitting flicker on the dimmer?

Usually the dimmer and LED aren't compatible. We check pairings before installation and can change the dimmer if needed.

Can I swap a light fitting myself?

No. In NSW, connecting light fittings to fixed wiring must be done by a licensed electrician.
