Short answer: A Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) is the NSW certificate your electrician lodges after electrical work, confirming it has been tested and complies with the regulations and standards. It must be submitted no later than 7 days after testing, and since 1 July 2026 all CCEWs must be lodged through the BCNSW eCert portal. Ask your electrician to add your email so you get a copy automatically.
If you’ve had electrical work done in NSW, you should have received a CCEW. Many homeowners have never heard of it, and some never get one. This guide explains what it is, when it’s required, how to get your copy and why it matters.
What a CCEW is
The NSW Government’s electrical compliance page explains that whenever electrical work has been done, electricians in NSW must submit a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work to prove compliance and that safety inspections have taken place. The certificate confirms the work has been tested and complies with the Gas and Electricity (Consumer Safety) Regulation 2018, the relevant Act and Australian Standards such as AS/NZS 3000 (the Wiring Rules).

What kind of work needs one?
A CCEW is needed for electrical wiring work, including:
- new circuits, power points and lights
- switchboard upgrades and safety switch installs
- rewiring
- hardwired appliances such as ovens, cooktops, hot water systems and air conditioners
- EV charger installations
- like-for-like replacements of hardwired items
If you’re unsure whether your job needs one, ask your electrician before work starts. A good quote will mention testing and the CCEW.
What’s on it
A CCEW typically records:
- the property address and customer details
- a description of the work and equipment installed
- the electrician’s and contractor’s licence details
- test results, such as earthing, insulation resistance, polarity and safety switch operation
- the test date and the electrician’s declaration
Why it matters to you
Safety
It’s evidence the work was tested. Untested work is a risk, whatever it looks like.
Warranty
The NSW Government notes a CCEW can help with warranty claims for the electrical item installed. Some appliance manufacturers ask for proof of licensed installation.
Insurance
If there’s ever a fire or damage claim, your insurer may ask whether electrical work was done by a licensed electrician. A CCEW is a clear record.
Selling or renting
Buyers’ inspectors, agents and tenants may ask about recent electrical work. A file of CCEWs shows the work was done properly. Landlords should keep them, as our landlord electrical safety checklist explains.
How to get your copy
According to the NSW Government’s consumer rights page, electricians can give you a copy by:
- adding your email address when completing the CCEW in BCNSW eCert, so the system emails it automatically when it’s lodged, or
- logging in to eCert later to download a copy to print or share
So when you book, give your electrician your email and ask for the CCEW to be sent to you.
Red flags
Be wary if an electrician:
- says a CCEW “isn’t needed” for wiring work
- offers a cash discount for skipping paperwork
- can’t give you a licence number
Check any electrician’s licence with Service NSW. More tips are in how to choose a licensed electrician in NSW.
Buying a home with unknown work
If you’re buying, ask the vendor for CCEWs for recent electrical work, such as a switchboard upgrade or renovation. If there are none, an electrical inspection can help. See electrical inspection before buying.
