Kitchen renovation electrician

A kitchen renovation puts more electrical load and more outlets into one room than anywhere else in the house. We work alongside your builder, cabinetmaker and plumber so the wiring is in the right place before the walls close up.

Ring 0421 772 661 early in the project, ideally while the layout is still on paper. A written quote is based on your plans and appliance list.

Where we fit in

The electrician's part of a kitchen job

Most kitchen renovations follow the same rhythm: strip-out, rough-in, plaster and cabinets, then fit-off. The electrician appears at three of those points. First we make the old wiring safe during demolition, then we run new cables while the frame is open, and finally we come back once the benchtops and splashback are in to connect everything.

For a detailed list of what to decide (power point counts, appliance circuits, lighting layers), our kitchen renovation electrical checklist covers the planning in depth. This page is about how the work actually runs on site and how we coordinate with everyone else.

Stage by stage

From plans to switching on

Every stage has a reason to get the electrician involved. Missing one usually means cutting into new plaster or a finished cabinet later.

!

Planning

We go through the appliance specs, the cabinet drawings and your switchboard. An induction cooktop and a wall oven together can need a lot of capacity, so we check the board and supply before anything is ordered.

!

Make-safe and strip-out

Old circuits feeding the kitchen are isolated and terminated safely so the builder can demolish without live cables in the way.

!

Rough-in

New cables are run to every outlet, appliance and light position while the studs and ceiling are exposed. Cable heights are set against the cabinet drawings, not guesswork.

!

Fit-off

After cabinets, benchtops and splashback, we fit power points, switches, lights and connect the cooktop, oven and rangehood to the manufacturers' instructions.

!

Testing and CCEW

Every circuit is tested to AS/NZS 3000 before handover, and we lodge a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work for the job.

Working with trades

Getting the sequence right

The cabinetmaker's final drawings are the most important document for us. Power points inside the pantry for a microwave, a dishwasher outlet that sits behind an adjacent cabinet rather than directly behind the machine, and under-cabinet lighting drivers all depend on exact cabinet positions. If drawings change after rough-in, tell us before the plasterer arrives.

With the plumber we agree where the sink, dishwasher and any instant hot water unit sit, so power and water don't end up competing for the same cavity. With the builder we agree when walls will be closed and when the splashback goes on, because fit-off can't happen until tiles or glass are finished around outlets.

Older Inner West kitchens, especially in terraces and Federation cottages, often reveal surprises once the walls are open: rubber-insulated cable, circuits shared with other rooms, or no safety switch protection. We flag those straight away so you can decide while access is easy. Our cooktop and oven job in Petersham shows a typical fit-off.

Budget

What drives the electrical cost

The biggest variables are whether the switchboard needs work, how many new circuits the appliances need, the amount of lighting, and how difficult the cable routes are. A kitchen that moves to the other side of the house costs more than one that keeps the same footprint. Our guide to renovation electrical cost explains the factors in more detail.

Questions

Common questions.

When should I call the electrician during a kitchen renovation?

Before appliances are ordered and before demolition. That way we can confirm the switchboard and supply can carry the new load and plan the rough-in around the cabinet drawings.

Can you work with my builder or kitchen company?

Yes. We regularly fit in around builders, cabinetmakers and plumbers. We just need the latest drawings and a heads-up on when walls will close.

Will I need a switchboard upgrade?

Not always. Older ceramic fuse boards or boards without room for new circuits often do. We check this at the planning stage so it isn't a surprise mid-job.

Do I get a compliance certificate?

Yes. Once the work is tested we lodge a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work, which is useful for your records and any future sale.

Can you install appliances I've bought myself?

Yes, we connect cooktops, ovens and rangehoods supplied by you or your kitchen company. Send us the model numbers so we can check the circuit each one needs.
