Bathrooms are small rooms with strict electrical rules. Water, steam and metal fittings mean the position of every switch, power point and light matters, and most of those decisions are locked in before the waterproofer arrives.

AS/NZS 3000 divides the space around baths and showers into zones. The closer a fitting is to the water, the tighter the restrictions on what can go there and how well sealed it must be. That's why a vanity power point can't simply go wherever is convenient, and why light fittings above a shower need an appropriate IP rating.
All the circuits in a renovated bathroom should be protected by a safety switch. If your home still has an older board without RCD protection on the lighting and power circuits feeding the room, we'll recommend fixing that as part of the job. See RCD vs RCBO for the difference between the two types of protection.
Each item affects the rough-in, so it helps to pick products early and send us the installation manuals.
Ducted to outside rather than into the roof space where possible. It can be switched with the light or run on a timer. Our exhaust fan and heat lamp guide has more detail.
Usually hard-wired on a concealed connection with a switch or timer outside the restricted zones. Brand pages like Thermorail cover specific products.
Heating mats go down before tiling, with a floor sensor and a thermostat. We test the mat before and after the tiler lays it.
LED strips, demister mirrors and shaving cabinets with power need cable left at exact heights.
Placed outside the restricted zones, often inside a shaving cabinet or beside the vanity at a sensible height.
Sealed downlights or oysters suitable for a damp area, laid out so the shower isn't in shadow.
A bathroom job usually runs strip-out, plumbing and electrical rough-in, sheeting, waterproofing, tiling, then fit-off. We rough in at the same time as the plumber so pipes and cables are planned together. Cables are kept clear of where the waterproof membrane and screed will go, and any penetrations through the wall are placed so the waterproofer can seal around them.
Underfloor heating has its own timing: the mat is laid after waterproofing and before tiling, so the tiler, the electrician and sometimes the waterproofer all need to know the date. We insulation-test the heating element before tiles go down and again afterwards, so any damage is caught while it can still be fixed.
At fit-off, once tiles, vanity and mirror are installed, we connect the fan, rail, lights and power points, test the safety switch and every circuit, and lodge a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work. In older Inner West homes we also check that the bathroom isn't sharing a circuit with half the house, which is common in terraces that were wired decades ago.
Yes, but it has to sit outside the restricted zones around the bath and shower and be protected by a safety switch. Inside a shaving cabinet or beside the vanity are common spots.
Usually twice: for rough-in alongside the plumber before the walls are sheeted, and for fit-off once tiling and the vanity are done. Underfloor heating adds a visit before tiling.
Ducting it to outside is usually better, because pushing moist air into the roof space can cause condensation and mould. We discuss the route with your builder.
Some can, but most people prefer a hard-wired connection with a switch or timer, which looks cleaner and keeps a cord away from water.
Yes. After testing we lodge a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work for the electrical part of the renovation.
