DEVI

DEVI Underfloor heating installation.

DEVI is a Danish brand of electric floor heating, part of the Danfoss group, offering heating cables and mats along with thermostats to control them. It's commonly used under tiles in bathrooms, kitchens and living areas, where a cold tiled floor is the main complaint in winter.

Underfloor heating is unusual because the heating element is buried under the floor finish. Once the tiles are down, it can't easily be reached. That's why timing and testing are everything: the cable or mat is laid on the prepared floor, tested, covered and tiled, and then tested again. We coordinate with your tiler so each step happens in the right order.

Blue Link Electrical is a licensed electrician based in Hurlstone Park (NSW Contractor Licence 332956C). We supply the circuit, install the thermostat and floor sensor wiring, connect the heating element, and test it at each stage.

Know your model

Cables, mats and the thermostat.

DEVI offers both loose heating cables and pre-spaced mats. Mats are quick to lay in regular-shaped rooms; loose cable is flexible around awkward shapes. Which suits your floor depends on the room shape, floor build-up and the manufacturer's guidance. Heat output and coverage come from the product data, and the installation manual sets spacing, clearances and where not to lay the element (for example under fixed cabinets or toilets).

The thermostat is the brain of the system. It controls the heating using a floor sensor that sits in the floor alongside the element. Position the thermostat somewhere practical, outside the wettest areas, and decide on scheduling so it isn't running when nobody's home. That's where most of the running-cost savings come from.

Before we install

What the installation needs.

!

Dedicated circuit

Larger floor areas usually need their own circuit from the switchboard. We size it to the system's load from the manual.

!

RCD protection

Underfloor heating circuits must have safety switch protection. We check your switchboard has room for it.

!

Thermostat and sensor

A wall-mounted thermostat with a floor sensor. Conduit for the sensor lets it be replaced if ever needed.

!

Laid before tiling

The element is laid on the prepared floor and covered before tiling, working closely with the tiler.

!

Testing at each stage

We test the element before, during and after covering so a damaged cable is found before tiles go down.

!

Switchboard capacity

Space for a new circuit and protection. Older boards may need an upgrade.

How it works

How we install it.

1. Plan. We look at the floor area, the system you've chosen and your switchboard, and agree the thermostat position.

2. Rough-in. We run the dedicated circuit, install the thermostat box and the conduit for the floor sensor.

3. Lay and test. The element is laid to the manual's layout on the prepared floor and tested. We coordinate with the tiler for covering and tiling, and test again.

4. Connect and certify. After tiling, we connect the thermostat, test the circuit to AS/NZS 3000 and provide a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work where required.

Common problems

Common DEVI problems.

!

Floor not warming

Check the thermostat schedule and settings first. A tripped circuit or sensor fault is next. We test from the switchboard to the element.

!

Safety switch tripping

A damaged element or moisture in a connection. See safety switch keeps tripping.

!

Damaged during tiling

Testing during installation catches this before tiles go down.

!

Faulty thermostat

Usually replaceable without touching the floor. Element faults may need specialist location.

Questions

DEVI Underfloor heating: common questions.

Does underfloor heating need its own circuit?

Larger systems usually do. We size the circuit from the system's load and your switchboard.

Can it be installed under existing tiles?

No. The element goes under the tiles, so it's installed as part of new flooring or a renovation.

Who lays the heating element?

It's laid on the prepared floor in coordination with the tiler. We connect and test it.

Do you supply DEVI products?

We install and connect them. Choose the system and we'll quote the electrical work.

Are you licensed?

Yes. NSW Electrical Contractor Licence 332956C, fully insured.
