Home extension electrician

An extension adds rooms, and every new room adds circuits and load. The question isn't only where the power points go; it's whether the house's supply and switchboard can carry the bigger home.

Ring 0421 772 661 while you're still working with your architect or builder. Early advice is far cheaper than changes after the slab is poured.

Before the build

Check the supply first

A typical Inner West extension adds a new kitchen or family room at the back, sometimes a bedroom upstairs, and often an extra bathroom. Add air conditioning, an induction cooktop and perhaps an EV charger, and the load can be much higher than the house was ever designed for.

At planning stage we look at the main switch, the service fuse and the existing switchboard. Some homes need a switchboard upgrade or a sub-board in the extension; occasionally the supply itself needs to be increased, which involves Ausgrid and takes time to arrange. Knowing that early stops it from holding up the job later.

!

Switchboard space

New circuits need room on the board. A full or ceramic-fuse board usually means an upgrade.

!

Sub-board

For a large extension or a second level, a sub-board close to the new rooms can make sense.

!

Supply capacity

We estimate the combined load of existing and new appliances, and flag if the supply may need to be increased.

!

Overhead service

If the extension is going where the overhead service cable crosses, the point of attachment may need to move. That needs planning with the network.

During construction

Power for the build and the rough-in

Builders need temporary power on site. Often that's a builder's supply or temporary board that keeps tools running while parts of the house are disconnected. We also make the existing house safe where walls are coming out, relocating or terminating circuits that run through the demolition area.

Rough-in happens once the frame and roof are up and before insulation and plaster. We run cables for lights, power, data, smoke alarms, air-con and appliances, and coordinate with the plumber, the air-con installer and the insulation installer so cables are routed sensibly and not buried under insulation where that affects their rating.

Finishing

Fit-off, testing and paperwork

After plaster and painting we fit off: switches, power points, light fittings, fans, smoke alarms and appliance connections. New habitable areas need smoke alarms placed to meet the NSW rules, and interconnecting them with existing alarms is often the sensible choice. See interconnected smoke alarms.

Every new and altered circuit is tested to AS/NZS 3000, and we lodge a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work. Your builder or certifier may ask for it at the end of the project, so we provide it promptly.

Blue Link Electrical is a licensed electrician based in Hurlstone Park, working on extensions across the Inner West and Sydney. We're used to older homes where the extension is far newer than the original wiring, and we'll tell you honestly if the old part of the house needs attention too.

Questions

Common questions.

Will my extension need a switchboard upgrade?

Often, if the existing board is old, full or uses ceramic fuses. We check during planning so it can be scheduled with the build.

Can the builder use power from the house during construction?

Sometimes, but a temporary builder's board is usually safer and keeps the house supply separate. We'll suggest what suits your site.

Do new rooms need smoke alarms?

New bedrooms and living areas usually need smoke alarms placed to meet NSW requirements. Your certifier will confirm what's needed for the approved plans.

What if the supply isn't big enough?

We can arrange an application with Ausgrid to increase it. That takes lead time, which is why we check early.

Do you work with my builder?

Yes. We work from the builder's program and plans and coordinate rough-in and fit-off around the other trades.
