3-in-1 bathroom heater vs exhaust fan

A 3-in-1 combines heat, light and an exhaust fan in one ceiling unit. A standalone exhaust fan just moves steamy air out. Which is better depends on how cold the bathroom gets, how well it needs to ventilate, and what else is in the ceiling.

What they are

All-in-one vs doing one job well.

A 3-in-1 unit, sold by brands such as IXL Tastic and others, has a fan, a light and a heat source in one fitting. The heat is usually infrared heat lamps that warm you directly, though some units use a fan-forced heater instead. Each function normally has its own switch, so you can run the fan without the heat.

A standalone exhaust fan is dedicated to ventilation. Some are combined with a light, and many are quieter or move more air than the fan built into a 3-in-1, though that varies by model. If you want warmth with a standalone fan, it comes from something else, such as a heated towel rail, a wall heater or underfloor heating.

Both should ideally be ducted outside rather than just into the roof space, so moist air leaves the house instead of collecting in the ceiling.

Which suits whom

Matching it to the bathroom.

!

Cold bathrooms in winter

A 3-in-1 gives instant warmth on a winter morning, which is why they're so common in older Sydney homes.

!

Mould and condensation problems

Ventilation is the priority. A good dedicated exhaust fan, properly ducted, often outperforms the fan in a combined unit.

!

Small ceiling or one opening

A 3-in-1 puts heat, light and fan in one cut-out, which helps in small bathrooms.

!

Kids and harsh light

Heat lamps are very bright and hot. Some families prefer a fan plus a heated towel rail or underfloor heating.

!

Energy use

Heat lamps draw significant power while on. Using them briefly is fine; leaving them on is costly. A timer helps.

!

Renovating anyway

Consider separating the jobs: a quiet ducted fan, LED downlights and a dedicated heating option.

Electrical side

Wiring, switching and clearances.

A 3-in-1 needs more conductors to the switch than a simple fan, because each function is switched separately, and heat lamps draw enough current that the circuit and switch need to suit. Swapping an old 3-in-1 for a new one is usually straightforward; converting a plain fan to a 3-in-1 can mean new cabling to a multi-gang switch.

Heat lamp units need clearance from roof insulation and timber, as set out in the manufacturer's instructions. In older Inner West homes we often find fans vented into the roof space, old flex cable, or units that have been on for years without a timer. Wiring in bathrooms also has to account for wet-area zones under AS/NZS 3000, which affects where switches and fittings can go.

Our bathroom exhaust fan and heat lamp wiring guide covers installation details. If your heat lamps have stopped, see IXL Tastic heat lamps not working; for a fan that's quit, see bathroom exhaust fan not working.

Questions

Common questions.

Is a 3-in-1 enough ventilation for a bathroom?

For many bathrooms, yes, if it's ducted outside. If you have ongoing mould or condensation, a dedicated exhaust fan may move more air.

Can I add a timer to my bathroom fan or heater?

Yes. A timer switch or run-on timer is a common upgrade and stops heat lamps or fans being left on.

Should my exhaust fan be ducted outside?

It's the better approach. Venting into the roof space can leave moisture in the ceiling.

Can I swap a 3-in-1 myself?

No. Bathroom heaters and fans are hard-wired, so replacement is licensed electrical work in NSW.

Which brands do you install?

We install and wire common brands, including IXL Tastic, Manrose and Ventair. Tell us the model and we'll check it suits your ceiling.
