Both are well-made hard-wired home chargers, and both will charge most EVs sold in Australia. The real difference is what else you want the charger to do, especially if you have rooftop solar.
Ring 0421 772 661 if you'd like us to look at your switchboard and parking spot before you choose. We install both, and the wiring side is very similar.
The Tesla Wall Connector is a simple, tethered charger: a fixed cable, a clean design and very little to configure once it's in. Despite the name, current versions use the standard Type 2 connector used in Australia, so it isn't limited to Teslas. Tesla owners like it because it fits neatly into the Tesla app and ecosystem.
The Zappi from myenergi is designed around solar. With current clamps (CTs) measuring what your home imports and exports, it can hold back charging until there's surplus solar, then feed that surplus into the car. It's available tethered or untethered, and in single-phase and three-phase versions.
Neither is better across the board. One is a tidy, low-fuss charger; the other is a solar diverter that also charges cars.
Tesla owners, people who mostly charge overnight, and anyone who wants plug-in-and-forget charging with minimal setup.
Homes with solar that export a lot during the day, and drivers whose car is often parked at home while the sun is up.
Most single-phase Inner West homes with off-street parking and a switchboard that has room for a new circuit.
Solar diversion is the Zappi's main reason to exist. It needs extra work at installation: CT clamps fitted at the grid connection (and sometimes the inverter), positioned and oriented correctly, then checked against real readings. In older homes where the meter box and switchboard are in different spots, planning that route is part of the quote.
The Wall Connector doesn't measure your solar on its own. Some owners manage charging through scheduling or through other Tesla products, but if maximising self-consumption of solar is your main goal, a solar-aware charger is the more direct path. If your car mostly charges after dark, solar diversion adds little and the simpler charger makes more sense.
For the electrician, the core job is the same for both: a dedicated circuit sized for the charger and the cable run, suitable RCD protection at the switchboard, a solid mounting position near the car, testing to AS/NZS 3000 and a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work.
The differences are at the edges. The Zappi adds CT clamps and their wiring. The Wall Connector has internal settings for the circuit's current rating that must be set to match the circuit we install. Either way, we check your supply and the other heavy loads in the house first, because a charger drawing current for hours on top of air conditioning and an oven can overload an older supply. Our Tesla Wall Connector install in Stanmore shows a typical result.
Room for a new protected circuit. Older ceramic fuse boards usually need an upgrade first.
Garage, carport or driveway runs vary a lot in length and difficulty, which affects cost more than the brand does.
Both use an app for updates and monitoring. Check signal reaches the parking spot.
How much solar do you export, and is the car home during the day? Do you drive a Tesla and want everything in one app? Do you want a fixed cable, or the flexibility of an untethered socket? Is your home single-phase (most Inner West homes are) and does your car's onboard charger make three-phase worthwhile?
Answer those and the choice usually becomes obvious. If you're still unsure, our guide to choosing a home EV charger covers the broader options.
Current Australian versions use the Type 2 connector, so they can charge most other EVs. Check the product details for your model and car before buying.
It will still charge your car normally, but its main advantage is solar diversion. Without solar, a simpler charger usually does the same job.
The basic circuit work is similar. A Zappi with solar diversion takes a bit longer because the CT clamps need fitting and checking.
No. Both come in versions that suit single-phase homes. Three-phase only helps if you already have it and your car can use it.
