Zappi vs Fronius Wattpilot

If you have solar and want your car to soak up the surplus, these two chargers come up again and again. They reach the same goal by different routes, and the right one often depends on the inverter already on your roof.

Ring 0421 772 661 and send a photo of your inverter and switchboard. That alone usually tells us which charger will be the cleaner install.

How they sense solar

Independent clamps versus inverter integration

The Zappi works things out for itself. CT clamps at the grid connection tell it whether the house is importing or exporting, and it adjusts charging to match. Because it doesn't rely on talking to the inverter, it works with most solar systems regardless of brand.

The Wattpilot comes from Fronius, the inverter maker, and is designed to work closely with Fronius inverters and a Fronius smart meter. In that setup, the charger gets its surplus-solar information from the existing Fronius system rather than from its own clamps. If you already have a Fronius inverter with a smart meter, that can make for a neat, well-integrated system. With another inverter brand, check carefully what solar features you'd actually get before choosing it.

Fronius has offered the Wattpilot in wall-mounted and portable-style versions; check exactly which model you're buying and whether it's intended to be hard-wired or plugged in, because that changes the electrical work.

Who suits which

Matching the charger to your setup

Think of this as a fit question rather than a quality question. Both are serious products from established energy companies.

!

Fronius inverter + smart meter

The Wattpilot is a natural fit, keeping monitoring and solar logic in the same family of products.

!

Another inverter brand

The Zappi's own CT clamps make it inverter-agnostic, which avoids compatibility questions.

!

Planning a battery

Think about how the charger, battery and inverter will share surplus. Ask your solar and battery installer how they'll prioritise them.

!

No solar yet

Either will charge normally. If solar is a few years away, choose based on what you'd likely install then.

The electrical work

Similar circuits, different extras

Whichever you pick, the charger needs a dedicated circuit with the right protection, cable sized for the current and length of the run, secure mounting near the car, testing to AS/NZS 3000 and a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work.

For the Zappi, the extra work is fitting the CT clamps and making sure they read the right direction. For the Wattpilot, the extra work is usually on the communication side: confirming the Fronius smart meter is in place and the charger can see the inverter data over your network. In both cases, a weak Wi-Fi signal at the garage is a common source of frustration, so it's worth checking early.

Before either goes in, we check switchboard space and whether your supply can handle charging alongside other heavy loads. Our guide to solar and battery ready switchboards explains what that check looks for.

Practical tips

Getting the most from surplus solar

Solar charging only helps if the car is home and plugged in while the sun is up. For people who commute by car every weekday, a solar-aware charger may mostly charge on weekends. That's still useful, but set expectations accordingly.

Also remember that surplus is what's left after the house's own use. On a cloudy day, or with air conditioning running, there may be little to spare, so both chargers offer ways to top up from the grid when you need range.

Questions

Common questions.

Does the Wattpilot work with non-Fronius inverters?

It will charge your car, but its solar features are designed around the Fronius system. Check the current Fronius documentation for your inverter before buying.

Does the Zappi need a particular inverter?

No. It measures grid import and export with its own CT clamps, so it works alongside most solar systems.

Will either charger stop me exporting solar?

In solar modes they use surplus that would otherwise be exported, so your export will drop while the car charges. That's usually the point.

Can you install a charger I've already bought?

Yes. Send us the model details and photos of your switchboard and parking spot, and we'll quote the installation.

Do you do the solar inverter work too?

We handle the charger circuit, switchboard and CT wiring. Changes to the solar system itself may need your solar installer.
