If your solar system already runs on a Fronius inverter, the Wattpilot is the charger designed to work with it, soaking up surplus solar into the car. We install Wattpilot chargers across the Inner West and Sydney.
Call 0421 772 661 for a quote. It helps to send photos of your inverter, the Fronius Smart Meter if you have one, and your switchboard.
Fronius is an Austrian company best known in Australia for its solar inverters. The Wattpilot is its EV charger, and its main appeal is how it fits into a Fronius solar system: with a Fronius Smart Meter measuring grid import and export, the Wattpilot can raise and lower its charging rate to use solar that would otherwise be exported.
That makes the installation a bit of a two-part job. There's the normal charger work, a dedicated circuit, protection and mounting, and then the system side: making sure the Smart Meter is in place and reading correctly, and that the Wattpilot can see the inverter and meter over your home network. If the meter is missing or wired the wrong way round, solar charging simply won't behave.
Blue Link Electrical is a licensed electrician based in Hurlstone Park (NSW Contractor Licence 332956C). We are independent of Fronius. We do the electrical installation and network setup, and we'll tell you honestly if your existing solar setup needs anything extra.
There are two broad types. The Wattpilot Home is a fixed, wall-mounted charger. The Wattpilot Go is designed to be portable and plugs into a suitable socket outlet, which means the electrician installs the correct dedicated outlet rather than hard-wiring the charger. Both come in versions for different supply capacities, so check the version you're buying against your home's supply and the Fronius manual.
Wattpilot is controlled from Fronius's Solar.wattpilot app, where you choose between charging as fast as possible and solar-optimised charging. To use the solar features you'll generally need a compatible Fronius inverter and Smart Meter. If your solar runs on a different inverter brand, ask us before buying; a charger with its own CT clamp may suit you better.
A dedicated circuit to a hard-wired Home unit, or a suitably rated dedicated outlet for a Go, sized to the charger version.
For solar-optimised charging the system needs to measure grid flow. Many Fronius installs already have one; some older ones don't.
The Wattpilot, inverter and meter need to communicate, usually over Wi-Fi. A solid signal in the garage matters more than with other chargers.
Solar homes often have crowded boards. We check there's room and suitable protection; see our solar and battery ready switchboard checklist.
Fitted to the type required by the Fronius installation manual and AS/NZS 3000.
Quote. We check the switchboard, inverter, meter and parking spot, and confirm whether you have the Home or Go version. If a Smart Meter is needed, we'll say so up front.
Electrical work. We install the circuit and protection, then mount and wire the Wattpilot Home, or fit the dedicated outlet and wall mount for a Go.
System setup. We connect the Wattpilot to your network, confirm it can see the inverter and Smart Meter, and set the charging current limit. Then we test solar-optimised charging on a sunny day if conditions allow, or show you what to watch for.
Testing and certification. Everything is tested to AS/NZS 3000 and you receive a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work.
Common causes are a missing or misread Smart Meter, a network dropout, or not enough surplus solar. See Fronius Wattpilot not charging.
Passing clouds change solar surplus quickly. Some stop-start is normal in solar mode; constant cycling may point to a setting or metering issue.
Wi-Fi range or router changes are the usual culprits. The charger can often still charge, but solar features need the connection.
Points to a circuit, cable or protection problem, or a fault in the charger or car. It needs testing. See EV charger tripping the breaker.
Detailed troubleshooting:
It will charge a car without one, but the solar-optimised features are designed around a Fronius inverter and Smart Meter. With another inverter brand, a different charger may suit better.
It's designed to plug into a suitable outlet, so you can unplug it and take it with you. At home we install a dedicated outlet rated for the version you have.
Often yes, if it's a compatible Fronius meter installed at the grid connection. We check how it's wired and configured before relying on it.
