Smappee started out as an energy monitoring company, and its EV chargers are built around that idea: measure the whole house, then charge the car within what's available. We install Smappee chargers and monitors across the Inner West and Sydney.

Smappee is a Belgian company. Its energy monitors use current clamps (CTs) on circuits at the switchboard to show where power is going, and its EV Wall chargers can work with that monitoring to adjust charging around your solar production and your home's total load.
That makes a Smappee installation a little more involved than fitting a standalone charger. Alongside the charger's own circuit, there's a monitoring unit to install in or near the switchboard, and CT clamps on the mains and, depending on what you want to measure, on the solar and other major circuits. The more you want the system to know, the more clamps are needed and the more switchboard space it takes.
Blue Link Electrical is a licensed electrician based in Hurlstone Park (NSW Contractor Licence 332956C). We're independent of Smappee. We install the charger and monitoring hardware, position the clamps correctly and certify the work.
Smappee's EV chargers come in home and business versions, and its energy monitors range from simple whole-home units to ones that measure many circuits. Some households already have a Smappee monitor and add the charger later; others buy both together. Check Smappee's current range and the manuals for the supply type and the monitor your charger needs for solar and overload features.
If you only want to charge a car, a Smappee may be more than you need. Where it shines is in homes that want detailed energy data, have solar, or have a limited supply where overload protection lets you charge without upgrading the service. In older Inner West homes with tight supply, that last point can be the deciding factor.
A dedicated circuit and protection sized to the charger version and cable run.
A monitoring unit at the switchboard, with CT clamps on the mains and on solar or other circuits you want measured.
Extra room for the monitor and clamps. Cramped or old boards may need upgrading.
The monitor and charger report through your home network, so both need reliable access.
If you have solar, we need to see the inverter connection to place a clamp correctly.
Survey. We look at the switchboard, meter box, solar inverter and parking spot, and talk through what you want the system to measure and control. The quote lists the charger, monitor and clamp work separately.
Install. We fit the charger's circuit and protection, mount and wire the EV Wall charger, then install the monitor and CT clamps in the positions Smappee specifies.
Commission. We get the charger and monitor online, set the current limit, and check that the clamps read the right direction and values, for example that solar export shows as export.
Test and certify. We test to AS/NZS 3000 and issue a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work.
A CT clamp facing the wrong way or on the wrong conductor gives misleading data and confuses solar charging.
Overload protection can be set conservatively, or the monitor may be reading a high load. Settings and clamp positions both need checking.
Usually network issues. The charger may fall back to basic charging until it reconnects.
Test the circuit, protection and charger. See EV charger tripping the breaker.
Basic charging doesn't need it, but solar and overload features depend on the monitor and its CT clamps.
In some homes, overload protection lets you charge within the existing supply by slowing charging when the house is busy. We assess this case by case.
Usually yes. We check the existing clamp setup and whether it covers what the charger needs.
No. You buy them and we install them. Warranty is through Smappee or your supplier.
