GoodWe

GoodWe EV charger installation.

GoodWe is a Chinese inverter manufacturer with a large presence in the Australian solar market. Its AC EV charger can work as a standalone charger, but it's designed to be paired with a GoodWe inverter so you can monitor charging alongside your solar generation in GoodWe's monitoring platform and direct surplus solar into the car.

If you already have GoodWe solar, this is the main reason to choose it: one ecosystem, one app. If your solar is from a different maker, the integrated features won't apply, and a charger with its own current clamp, such as a Zappi, may be the more flexible option.

Blue Link Electrical is a licensed electrician based in Hurlstone Park (NSW Contractor Licence 332956C). We install the GoodWe charger you've chosen, connect it as GoodWe's documentation requires, and test and certify the circuit. We have no business relationship with GoodWe.

Know your model

Before you buy a GoodWe charger.

GoodWe's EV chargers come in versions for different supplies, including single-phase and three-phase. Match the version to your home's supply, which for most Inner West houses is single-phase, and confirm with GoodWe's documentation that your inverter model supports the integrated charging features.

Also check how the charger talks to the inverter. Depending on the model, it may need a network connection, a data cable or an extra meter. Knowing this before the install avoids a second visit, and in older homes with the inverter on the side wall and the board inside, the data link can affect how we plan the cable runs.

Before we install

What the installation needs.

!

A dedicated circuit

From the switchboard to the charger, with cable sized for the charger's current and the distance.

!

Inverter compatibility

Integrated solar charging needs a GoodWe inverter that supports it, sometimes with a firmware update.

!

Data or network link

Charger-to-inverter communication as GoodWe specifies, by network or cable.

!

Switchboard space

A free position and suitable protection. If the board is full or old, see signs you need a switchboard upgrade.

!

Protection

RCD type and breaker rating chosen per GoodWe's manual and AS/NZS 3000.

How it works

How we install it.

Our first step is a check of your GoodWe inverter model, meter arrangement and switchboard. Many of these homes have a solar installation from a few years ago, so we look at whether the existing board can take another circuit safely.

We then install the dedicated circuit, mount the charger and connect it following GoodWe's installation manual, including any data cable or meter it needs to communicate with the inverter.

With the electrical work done, we set the current limit, bring the charger online and check it shows up in the monitoring app. A test charge confirms it works with your car.

We finish by testing to AS/NZS 3000 and issuing your Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work.

Common problems

Common GoodWe problems.

!

Charger not linking to the inverter

Often a network, firmware or configuration mismatch. GoodWe support or your solar installer may need to help with system settings.

!

Solar charging not kicking in

Check the charging mode and whether there's enough surplus. A missing or misplaced meter also stops it working.

!

Safety switch tripping

Could be the circuit, cable damage, protection type or a fault in the charger or car. See EV charger tripping the breaker.

!

Board too crowded

Solar, battery and charger circuits can overwhelm a small board. An upgrade gives room and modern protection.

Questions

GoodWe EV charger: common questions.

Can I use a GoodWe charger without GoodWe solar?

It can charge your car, but the integrated solar features are designed for compatible GoodWe inverters.

Does it need three-phase power?

No. Single-phase versions suit single-phase homes. Three-phase versions only make sense where three-phase supply exists.

Can you set up the GoodWe app?

We bring the charger online and check it appears in the monitoring app. Account-level system settings may need your solar installer or GoodWe.

Do you supply the charger?

No. You buy it and we install it. Product warranty is through GoodWe or your retailer.

Are you licensed?

Yes. NSW Electrical Contractor Licence 332956C, fully insured, trading since 2016.
