Fronius Wattpilot not charging?

The Wattpilot is designed to work closely with a Fronius solar system, so a lot of 'not charging' calls turn out to be the charger waiting for solar surplus it isn't seeing. Supply faults and plug or outlet problems make up most of the rest.

Run through the checks below. If it still won't charge, phone 0421 772 661 and we'll test the installation.

Safety first

Before you do anything.

Heat, a burning smell, melted plastic at a plug or outlet, or water around the charger are all reasons to stop. If it's safe, switch the circuit off at the switchboard or main switch and keep clear. Call 000 if there's fire or someone has had a shock.

Don't open the Wattpilot, an outlet, or the switchboard. Everything here is a look-and-check from the outside.

Quick checks

Safe things you can check yourself.

!

Check the charging mode

In the Fronius app, see which mode the Wattpilot is in. A mode that only uses solar surplus will sit idle at night or under heavy cloud. Switch to a mode that allows grid power to test it.

!

Is the inverter producing?

If the solar inverter is offline, faulted or showing no production, a solar-led charging mode has nothing to work with. Check the inverter's own display or app.

!

Check the plug and outlet

Some Wattpilot versions connect by plug rather than being hard-wired. Make sure the plug is fully inserted and the outlet is switched on, and look for any discolouring around it.

!

Check the switchboard

Look for a tripped breaker or safety switch on the charger's circuit. Reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off.

!

Check the car

Make sure the car isn't on its own schedule or already at its charge limit, and reconnect the charging cable firmly.

Causes

What usually causes it.

No surplus being detected. Solar-surplus charging depends on the Wattpilot getting accurate information about what your home is exporting, usually via the Fronius system's smart meter. If the meter is offline, wired incorrectly or the link between devices has dropped, the Wattpilot behaves as though there's no surplus. Meter wiring at the switchboard is electrical work.

Outlet or plug overheating. Where a Wattpilot is plugged into an outlet, that outlet is carrying a heavy load for hours. Worn contacts or an undersized outlet can heat up and fail. A discoloured or warm outlet should be replaced, and the circuit checked to suit the charger.

Supply interruptions. A tripped breaker or RCD, a loose termination or a problem upstream at the switchboard will stop charging. If several things lost power at once, the problem may be bigger than the charger circuit.

Unit, app or car faults. If the supply and metering are correct, the issue may be in the Wattpilot's firmware or hardware, in the app, or in the vehicle. Fronius's support and warranty process handles unit faults.

When to call

When it needs an electrician.

Call us if solar charging never kicks in on sunny days, if the outlet or plug feels warm or looks scorched, if the safety switch keeps tripping, or if the charger has no power while the rest of the house is fine.

We check the circuit and protection, the outlet or hard-wired connection, and the smart meter wiring at the switchboard. For setup details, see our Fronius Wattpilot installation page.

Questions

Common questions

Why does my Wattpilot only charge sometimes?

If it's set to use solar surplus, it charges when there's enough spare solar and stops when there isn't. That's normal. Change the mode if you need the car charged overnight regardless of solar.

Does the Wattpilot need a Fronius inverter?

It can charge without one, but its solar-surplus features are designed around Fronius systems with the right metering. Without that link, it charges like a standard charger.

My outlet gets warm when the Wattpilot charges. Is that OK?

Noticeable warmth isn't something to ignore. Stop using it and have the outlet and circuit checked, as worn contacts can overheat under long loads.

Solar charging stopped after I had other electrical work done. Why?

A meter or communications cable may have been disturbed. An electrician can check the meter's position and wiring at the switchboard.

Do you repair the Wattpilot itself?

We repair the electrical side: circuit, outlet, protection and meter wiring. Internal faults go to Fronius's support and warranty.
