DC vs AC ceiling fans

Every ceiling fan is powered from the same 230-volt household supply. "DC" and "AC" describe the motor inside: DC fans convert the power and drive the motor electronically, while AC fans run the motor directly from the mains.

Ring 0421 772 661 to have either type installed. Tell us how you'd like to control it and we'll plan the wiring to suit.

The differences

What you notice day to day

DC fans are generally more energy-efficient, quieter at low speeds, and offer more speed settings, often with features like a reverse function and timers controlled by remote. They're usually lighter too. That's why most newer mid- and upper-range fans have DC motors.

AC fans are the traditional design. They tend to cost less to buy, have fewer electronics to go wrong, and many can be run from a simple wall-mounted speed controller with no remote at all. Some people simply prefer that: no batteries, no pairing, just a dial by the door.

!

DC suits

Bedrooms where quiet low-speed running matters, people who want lots of speed steps, and rooms where the fan runs for long hours.

!

AC suits

Budget-conscious installs, outdoor or simple utility spaces, and households who prefer a straightforward wall control.

Blade span for the room, ceiling height, light kit options and whether the fan is rated for outdoor or coastal use.

Controls

Remote, wall control or both

This is where the two types differ most for the electrician. A DC fan normally takes a constant supply and is controlled by its remote or a wall control made for that fan; a standard AC fan speed controller is not suitable for a DC fan. Some DC fans offer an optional wall controller, and some can be paired with smart systems. Check what your specific model supports before the wiring goes in.

AC fans are often wired to a wall speed controller with a separate switch for the light. If you want a fan controller and a light switch at the door, say so at the planning stage, because it may need an extra cable run from ceiling to switch.

Whichever you choose, it's sensible to have an isolating switch or a clear way to turn the fan off at the wall, so a lost remote doesn't leave you stuck.

Installation

Mounting matters more than motor type

Both types need firm fixing to the ceiling structure, not just to plasterboard. In older Inner West homes with lath-and-plaster or ornate ceilings, that sometimes means adding timber bracing in the ceiling space. We also check blade clearance and ceiling height, and make sure the fan is balanced so it doesn't wobble.

DC fans can occasionally lose their remote pairing after a power outage; it's usually a simple re-pair rather than a fault. See DC fan not working after a power outage. Our ceiling fan installation cost guide covers what affects the price.

Questions

Common questions.

Are DC fans cheaper to run?

DC motors are generally more efficient than AC motors, so they typically use less electricity at the same speed. Check the energy figures for the models you're comparing.

Can I use my old wall speed controller with a new DC fan?

Usually not. DC fans are controlled by their own remote or a matching wall control. We'll remove or replace the old controller.

Are DC fans less reliable?

They have more electronics, which can be affected by surges or outages, but quality DC fans are widely used and generally dependable.

Can a ceiling fan go where a light is now?

Often, if the ceiling structure can support it and there's enough height. We check the fixing and wiring first.

Do you install fans I've bought?

Yes. We install customer-supplied fans and handle the wiring and controls. Licence 332956C.
