Hunter Pacific Ceiling fan installation.

A ceiling fan looks simple, but it is a spinning weight hanging over your bed or couch. The two things that matter most are what it's fixed to and how it's wired. Hunter Pacific supplies a mounting bracket with each fan; that bracket has to go into solid timber, such as a ceiling joist or a noggin we add between joists, not just into plasterboard.

Hunter Pacific's range covers a lot of ground, so it suits most homes: small bedrooms, open living areas, alfresco spaces and high-ceilinged rooms. Many models can be ordered with or without a light, and the control options vary from a wall controller to a handheld remote, depending on the model.

Blue Link Electrical is a licensed electrician based in Hurlstone Park (NSW Contractor Licence 332956C). We install fans you have bought yourself, check the existing light circuit, fit the bracket to structure, and test the fan at every speed before we leave. We install and wire the fan; we don't sell it, and product warranty sits with the manufacturer.

Know your model

AC or DC, light or no light: decide first.

Hunter Pacific sells both AC and DC motor fans. AC fans are the traditional type and are often run from a wall-mounted speed controller. DC fans generally use less power, run more quietly and offer more speeds, and they're usually driven by a remote or a wall control designed for that fan. The installation manual for your exact model tells you which controls are compatible, and it's worth reading before you buy, because a standard AC speed controller is not a substitute on a DC fan.

Blade span and drop matter too. A big fan in a small room can feel blustery, while a small fan in a big open-plan room barely moves air. Inner West cottages with lofty ceilings may need an extension rod so the blades sit at a comfortable height; check that a suitable rod is available for your model. If you want a light, choose a fan with an integrated LED or a compatible light kit rather than trying to adapt something else.

Before we install

What the installation needs.

!

Solid fixing

The bracket screws into a joist or a timber noggin. If the joist isn't where you want the fan, we add timber in the roof space where access allows.

!

A suitable circuit

Most fans run from the lighting circuit. We check the circuit is protected by a safety switch and isn't already overloaded.

!

Control wiring

A wall controller needs the right cabling from switch to fan. A remote-only fan may just need a switched or permanent supply, as the manual specifies.

!

Ceiling height

Blades need safe clearance from the floor and from walls or doors. High ceilings may call for a longer rod.

!

Roof-space access

We need to get above the ceiling to run cable and fix timber. Second-storey rooms or flat ceilings with no access take more planning.

How it works

How we install it.

1. Quote. We check the fan model, the existing light point, what's above the ceiling and how you want to control it, then give you a written quote.

2. Fixing. We locate the joists, add a noggin if needed, and secure the bracket to timber. Any old light fitting or batten is removed and the cable made safe.

3. Wiring and assembly. We assemble the fan to the manufacturer's instructions, connect it, fit the wall control or pair the remote, and balance the blades if needed.

4. Test. We run every speed, reverse and the light, check for wobble and noise, and test the circuit to AS/NZS 3000. You receive a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work where required.

Common problems

Common Hunter Pacific problems.

!

Remote stops responding

Often a flat battery or lost pairing, but a supply issue can look the same. See Hunter Pacific fan remote not working.

!

Wobble at high speed

Usually a loose bracket, unbalanced blades or fixing to plaster only. See ceiling fan wobbling.

!

Hum from an AC fan

Can come from an incompatible speed controller or dimmer. See ceiling fan humming.

!

Fan dead after a blackout

Some DC fans need re-pairing or a power cycle after an outage. See DC fan not working after a power outage.

Detailed troubleshooting:

Questions

Hunter Pacific Ceiling fan: common questions.

Can you install a Hunter Pacific fan where my light is now?

Usually, yes. We replace the light with the fan, but we still need solid timber above to fix the bracket, so we may add a noggin in the roof space.

Can I use my old wall speed controller with a new DC fan?

Generally no. DC fans use their own remote or a matched wall control. Check the manual for which controls work with your model.

Do Hunter Pacific fans suit outdoor areas?

Some models are made for covered outdoor use. Check the product rating for damp or outdoor locations, and the circuit outside must be RCD protected.

Will the fan work with a light?

Many Hunter Pacific fans have an integrated LED or an optional light kit. Choose a model with the light designed for it.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Blue Link Electrical holds NSW Electrical Contractor Licence 332956C and is fully insured.
