Calibo

Calibo Ceiling fan installation.

DC fans like most of the Calibo range are a good match for bedrooms and living rooms where noise matters. They usually have more speed settings than old AC fans, low running costs, and a remote so you don't need a wall controller. The trade-off is electronics: the fan has a receiver and driver inside that need the right supply and that don't like being fed through the wrong type of switch or dimmer.

Like every ceiling fan, a Calibo needs to be screwed into the building's timber, not hung off plaster. That's the part customers can't see, and the part we spend the most care on.

Blue Link Electrical is a licensed electrician based in Hurlstone Park (NSW Contractor Licence 332956C). We install Calibo fans throughout the Inner West and Sydney. We install and wire them; we're not a Calibo dealer, and the product warranty is the manufacturer's.

Know your model

DC fans: what they need from the wiring.

Most Calibo fans are controlled by remote, and some can also be fitted with a wall control. A DC fan generally needs a plain supply rather than a speed controller, so if you're replacing an AC fan, the old controller on the wall usually goes. A simple on/off switch is often kept as an isolation point, so you can cut power to the fan completely. The installation manual for your model sets out exactly how the supply and any wall control should be connected.

Calibo's range includes fans for small and large rooms, and some outdoor-rated models for covered areas. For high ceilings, check whether a longer rod is available for your fan. For Federation and inter-war homes with decorative roses or pressed-metal ceilings, we'll look at how the canopy will meet the ceiling and where the fixing can go before we commit to the position.

Before we install

What the installation needs.

!

Solid mounting

Into a ceiling joist or a noggin. Pressed-metal and lath-and-plaster ceilings need extra care to reach timber.

!

Plain supply

DC fans generally need a supply, not a speed controller. An on/off switch can serve as isolation.

!

Safety switch

We confirm the circuit is RCD protected, and recommend adding protection if not.

!

Clearance

Safe blade height and room around the fan.

!

Outdoor rating

Only outdoor or damp-rated models in alfresco areas, on weatherproof wiring.

How it works

How we install it.

1. Look first. We inspect the ceiling, roof space, existing switch and any old controller, then quote in writing.

2. Fix and prepare. We secure the bracket into timber and arrange the supply as the manual requires, removing any old speed controller.

3. Fit and pair. We assemble the fan, connect it, fit the light and pair the remote, then check it sits level.

4. Test and certify. Every speed, reverse and the light are checked, the circuit is tested to AS/NZS 3000, and a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work is issued where required.

Common problems

Common Calibo problems.

!

Fan dead after a blackout

Some DC fans need a power cycle or re-pairing. See DC fan not working after a power outage.

!

Remote not working

Batteries, pairing or no supply. See ceiling fan remote not working.

!

Old controller still fitted

Running a DC fan through an AC speed controller can cause faults. We remove or replace it.

!

Tripping the safety switch

Can be a wiring fault or a failed driver. See safety switch keeps tripping.

Questions

Calibo Ceiling fan: common questions.

Why do I need to remove my old fan controller?

Old AC speed controllers aren't designed for DC fans. The DC fan does its own speed control from the remote.

Can I still have a wall switch?

Yes, an on/off switch is commonly kept for isolation, and some models offer a matched wall control. Check your manual.

Is a Calibo fan suitable for a bedroom?

DC fans are generally quiet, which suits bedrooms. Pick a blade size that suits the room.

Can you fix a fan to a pressed-metal ceiling?

Often, yes, but the fixing must go through to timber behind and we take care not to damage the ceiling. We'll look before quoting.

Are you licensed?

Yes. Blue Link Electrical holds NSW Electrical Contractor Licence 332956C and is fully insured.
