Ikuu is Mercator's smart home range, and its ceiling fans can be controlled from a phone app as well as a remote or wall switch. The electrical install is a normal fan install, with a bit more thought about the supply and the Wi-Fi.

Mercator is a long-standing Australian lighting and electrical brand, and Ikuu is the name of its connected range: smart lights, switches, power products and fans that share an app. An Ikuu fan still has to be physically fixed and wired like any other fan, but the smart part changes one thing: the fan's receiver needs constant power to stay online, so how the wall switch is wired matters.
These fans suit people who want to set schedules, control the fan from bed or another room, or group it with Ikuu lights. If you only ever use a wall switch, a conventional fan may be simpler.
Blue Link Electrical is a licensed electrician based in Hurlstone Park (NSW Contractor Licence 332956C). We install Ikuu fans across the Inner West and Sydney, set them up on your network if you'd like, and test them before we go. We install and wire them; we're not a Mercator dealer, and product support is through Mercator.
If a smart fan is wired through an ordinary wall switch and someone turns that switch off, the fan drops off the app until the power comes back. There are a few ways to handle this, depending on the model: a permanent supply to the fan with control by app and remote only, or a compatible smart wall control from the same range. Check the installation manual for the options your model supports before we rough in the cabling.
Wi-Fi coverage matters as much as wiring. A fan at the far end of a long terrace or in a brick extension may be out of range of the router. It's worth checking signal strength in that room on your phone first; if it's patchy, see our guide to Wi-Fi dead spots. As with all fans, blade size, ceiling height and whether you want an integrated light are decisions to make before buying.
The bracket must screw into timber. We add a noggin where the joist doesn't line up with the fan position.
Smart fans usually want power to the receiver at all times. We wire the switch and supply the way the manual sets out.
A reliable 2.4 GHz signal at the fan location is commonly needed for smart devices; check the product requirements.
The lighting circuit feeding the fan should be protected by a safety switch.
Roof-space access to run cable and fix timber. Rooms with no access above take more work.
1. Check the room. We look at the ceiling, what's above it, the existing switch, and the Wi-Fi signal where the fan will hang.
2. Rough-in. We fix the bracket to structure and run or alter the cabling so the fan has the supply arrangement its manual calls for.
3. Fit and connect. We assemble the fan, connect it, and pair it to the remote and, if you want, to the app on your phone.
4. Test. We run each speed, the reverse and the light from every control, test the circuit to AS/NZS 3000, and provide a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work where required.
Often the wall switch was turned off or the Wi-Fi dropped. See Mercator Ikuu fan not working.
Smart and DC fans sometimes need re-pairing. See DC fan not working after a power outage.
Usually a pairing or settings issue in the app rather than an electrical fault.
Check blade fixings and the bracket. See ceiling fan wobbling.
Detailed troubleshooting:
The app features do. The fan can usually still run from its remote or wall control without the internet, depending on the model.
Because the switch cuts power to the fan's receiver. We can wire it so the fan stays powered and is controlled by app, remote or a compatible smart control.
Yes, we can pair it during the installation if you have the app ready and your Wi-Fi details on hand.
Compatibility varies. Check Mercator's documentation; mixing systems often means separate apps.
