IXL Tastic heat lamps not working?

IXL Tastic units combine heat lamps, an exhaust fan and often a light in one bathroom ceiling fitting. When the lamps won't come on, the cause can be as simple as blown lamps or as involved as a switch or wiring fault.

If you're not sure which, call 0421 772 661 and we'll find out and fix it.

Safety first

Before you do anything.

Heat lamps run very hot. If you see scorching on the ceiling or the unit's surround, smell burning, see a cracked lamp, or there's water dripping from the unit, switch it off at the wall and leave it off. Turn off the circuit at the switchboard if you can reach it safely, and call an electrician. Call 000 if there's fire or smoke.

Never touch a lamp that's been on recently, and never take the unit's fascia or body down. If a lamp is broken or stuck, leave it for an electrician.

Quick checks

Safe things you can check yourself.

!

Which part has stopped?

Try the heat switch, the fan and the light separately. If only one lamp is out, it's very likely a blown lamp. If all lamps are out but the fan and light work, look at the heat switch or the heat circuit. If everything is dead, it's the supply.

!

Check the switchboard

Look for a tripped breaker or safety switch. Some homes have the heat lamps on a separate circuit from the fan and light. Reset it once only.

!

Count the blown lamps

Heat lamps do wear out. If one or two of several have stopped, the lamps themselves are the likely cause. Lamps should be replaced only with the type specified in the IXL manual, with the power off and the lamps fully cool. If you're not comfortable doing that, we'll do it.

!

Try the switch firmly

Heat switches get heavy use. If the lamps flicker when you press the switch, or work only when it's held, the switch is worn. Don't keep using it; have it replaced.

!

Give it a rest

If the lamps went off after a long run and later came back, mention this when you call. It can point to the unit overheating, often from poor ventilation in the ceiling.

Causes

What usually causes it.

Blown lamps. The most common reason for one or two lamps not working. Replacement with the correct lamp type fixes it.

Worn switch or loose connection. The heat circuit carries a solid load whenever the lamps are on, and over the years switches and terminals can wear or loosen. Signs include flickering, a warm switch plate, or lamps that work intermittently. This is a job for a licensed electrician and shouldn't be left.

Tripping or supply faults. Moisture, a damaged cable in the roof space or a fault in the unit can trip the safety switch. Repeated tripping needs testing. Our guide on safety switches that keep tripping explains how we narrow it down.

Faults inside the unit. If power is reaching the unit and new lamps don't help, the fault is within the fitting itself. That's either a warranty matter for IXL or, for an older unit, a sign it's time to replace it.

When to call

When it needs an electrician.

Call us if all the lamps have stopped but the fan still works, if the switch plate is warm or the lamps flicker, if there's any discolouration around the unit, or if a breaker or safety switch trips when the heat is turned on.

We test the circuit, the switch and the connections, replace worn parts, and replace the unit where needed. See our IXL Tastic installation page, and our exhaust fan and heat lamp guide for how these units should be wired.

Questions

Common questions

Only one heat lamp has stopped. What's wrong?

Most likely a blown lamp. Replace it with the type specified in the manual, once the power is off and the lamps are cool, or have us do it.

All the heat lamps stopped but the fan works. Why?

That points to the heat switch, the heat circuit or a connection. Have an electrician test it.

My heat switch feels warm. Is that normal?

No. Stop using the heat lamps and have the switch and connections checked.

Can I upgrade my old Tastic to a newer unit?

Usually, yes. We check the cut-out size, the circuit and the ducting, then fit and test the new unit.

Do you repair Tastic units under warranty?

Warranty faults inside the unit go through IXL. We look after the switching, circuit and installation, and can confirm the supply is sound.
