Fisher & Paykel induction cooktop not working?

Before you book an appliance technician, it's worth spending a few minutes working out whether your Fisher & Paykel cooktop is actually faulty or simply isn't getting power. The answer decides who you need to call.

If it turns out to be the supply, call 0421 772 661. We're licensed electricians based in Hurlstone Park.

Safety first

Before you do anything.

Any sign of overheating, such as a burning smell, smoke from the cupboard below, or discoloured fittings, means switch the cooktop off at the switchboard and don't use it again until it's checked. If you can see flames, call 000.

Keep panels and covers in place. Don't try to look at the wiring under the bench or behind the switchboard cover.

Quick checks

Safe things you can check yourself.

!

Display or no display?

Start here. A lit display means power is getting through. A blank one means the problem is likely upstream of the cooktop.

!

Release any lock

Fisher & Paykel cooktops have a lock function to prevent accidental use. If controls are lit but unresponsive, check your user guide for how to unlock it.

!

Clean the touch area

Spills, steam condensation or a damp cloth over the controls can stop them registering. Wipe them dry with the cooktop off.

!

Isolator and switchboard

Check the cooktop's isolator switch is on and look for anything tripped at the switchboard. Reset once only.

!

Cookware test

If a zone lights but won't heat, try a pan you know is induction-compatible. Lightweight or small pans may not be recognised.

Causes

What usually causes it.

Supply side: our job. A tripped or faulty breaker, an RCD that keeps dropping out, an isolator that has failed, or a cable termination that has overheated. These are the faults we find most often on cooktops that are completely dead. We measure voltage at the connection and test the circuit.

Installation mismatch. Induction cooktops often need more capacity than the cooktop they replaced. If a Fisher & Paykel induction model was connected to an old circuit without checking, you may see tripping on high settings or warm connections. The installation guide sets out the supply it needs.

Settings and safety features. Lock modes, automatic switch-off and pan detection make a healthy cooktop seem broken. These don't need an electrician; the user guide covers them.

Appliance faults. If the supply is confirmed and the cooktop still won't operate, or it shows an error on the display, it's an internal fault for Fisher & Paykel's service team.

When to call

When it needs an electrician.

Call us if the cooktop is dead while its breaker is on, if a breaker or safety switch trips each time you cook, if any switch or outlet near the cooktop is warm or marked, or if the issue appeared after electrical or kitchen work.

We give you a straight answer on whether the supply is sound. If it is, you can book Fisher & Paykel service knowing the wiring isn't the problem. More on our Fisher & Paykel cooktop installation page.

Questions

Common questions

How do I know if it's the cooktop or the power?

If the display lights up, power is reaching it. If it's blank with the breaker on, have the supply tested before booking an appliance repair.

My cooktop shows an error on the display. Can you fix that?

Display errors are usually appliance-side. Check the user guide or contact Fisher & Paykel. If the error relates to supply voltage, we can test that.

Why does my breaker trip only when I use several zones?

The combined load may be too much for the circuit, or a connection may be overheating. That needs an electrician.

Can I reconnect the cooktop myself after moving it?

No. Cooktops are hard-wired and must be connected by a licensed electrician in NSW.

Do you service Fisher & Paykel appliances?

We handle the electrical installation only. Internal repairs go through Fisher & Paykel's service network.
