Ness alarm keypad beeping?

Ness panels are common in Sydney homes, and many have been on the wall for years. A keypad that beeps on its own, often with a light or message showing, is the system flagging a fault rather than an intrusion.

Here's what to check before calling. If the beeping won't stop or keeps returning, ring 0421 772 661 and we'll find the cause.

Safety first

Before you do anything.

Don't open the panel box. It holds the backup battery and a mains connection, and opening it can set off a tamper alarm. If there's heat, a burning smell or any sign of damage near the panel or switchboard, turn off at the main switch if it's safe and call us.

If there's smoke or fire, get everyone out and call 000. A beeping alarm keypad is not the same as a smoke alarm. If your smoke alarms are sounding, treat that as a fire until you know otherwise.

Quick checks

Safe things you can check yourself.

!

Note what the keypad shows

Look for a lit fault or trouble indicator, a zone number or a message. Your user manual or the Ness support material explains what each indicator means on your keypad model.

!

Was there a blackout?

A recent power cut can leave the panel warning about mains loss or a battery that has run down. Check Ausgrid's outage information or call 13 13 88.

!

Check the plugpack or supply

Many panels are powered from a plugpack in a nearby power point. Check it's plugged in and switched on. If the panel is hardwired, check the switchboard for a tripped circuit and reset it once.

!

Walk the zones

If a zone number is shown, check that area for an open door or window, a knocked sensor or something hanging in front of a motion detector.

!

Silence with your code

Entering your user code often acknowledges the fault and stops the beeping, but check the manual for your panel. Never guess at codes.

Causes

What usually causes it.

Ageing backup battery. Older systems in particular often beep because the backup battery can no longer hold a charge. The panel tests it and warns when it's weak. This is the cause we see most often in long-installed systems.

Lost mains power. A plugpack unplugged during cleaning, a power point switched off, a tripped circuit or a failed transformer leaves the panel on battery. It warns you, then eventually shuts down when the battery runs flat.

Tamper or zone faults. Sensor cables damaged during renovations, a sensor cover that's been knocked off, or moisture in a detector can all show as tamper or zone trouble.

Dialler or communication trouble. Systems connected to monitoring may beep when they can't report, which is common after phone line changes or the switch to NBN. Setting up communication is a job for your installer or monitoring provider.

When to call

When it needs an electrician.

Call us if the fault returns after you've acknowledged it, the panel shows no mains power, the battery warning won't clear after a day of normal power, or a zone or tamper fault keeps showing.

We're NSW security licensed (S00014414) and electrical licensed (332956C), so we can test the panel's supply, battery and sensor wiring in one visit. See our Ness alarm installation page.

Questions

Common questions

Why does my Ness alarm beep at night?

A weakening battery is a common reason, as the panel's battery test can fail at any time of day. Check the keypad's fault indication and your manual.

How often should an alarm battery be replaced?

It depends on the battery and how often power cuts drain it. If it's been in for several years and faults keep appearing, replacement is usually due.

My Ness alarm beeps after the NBN was connected. Why?

The panel may have lost its phone line connection for monitoring. Contact your monitoring provider or installer about a new communication method.

Can I unplug the alarm to stop the beeping?

We don't recommend it. The panel will keep running on battery and keep warning you, and you lose the protection once the battery is flat.

Do you service older Ness systems?

We check power, batteries and wiring on existing alarms. Programming access depends on the panel and the original installer's codes.
