PSA Emerald Smoke alarm installation.

Replacing a hardwired smoke alarm sounds simple, but the details depend on what's on the ceiling now. Older alarms may sit on a mounting base with a plug-in connector, or be wired directly. A new alarm from the same range may connect to an existing base, or the base may need replacing too. That's why we check the existing alarm before quoting a straight swap.

Emerald alarms are a common sight in Sydney homes and are often chosen for straightforward replacements and rental properties. Whether you're replacing a single faulty alarm or a full set that has reached its replace-by date, the goal is the same: every alarm working, correctly positioned and, where interconnected, sounding together.

Blue Link Electrical is a licensed electrician based in Hurlstone Park (NSW Contractor Licence 332956C). Hardwired smoke alarm work must be done by a licensed electrician, and we provide a Certificate of Compliance for it.

Know your model

Swapping like for like.

Before buying replacement Emerald alarms, look at the label on your current ones: it shows whether the alarm is mains or battery powered, the sensing type and the replace-by date. If the existing alarms are interconnected, all of them need to be compatible with each other after the change, so a partial replacement must use models designed to link with what's staying.

If your home has ionisation alarms, consider replacing them with photoelectric ones, which are generally recommended for homes. We'll talk through options, including whether to add alarms in rooms that currently have none. For the legal side, read NSW smoke alarm rules; we'd rather point you there than oversimplify it.

Before we install

What the installation needs.

!

Identify the existing base

We check whether the new alarm can use the existing base and connector or needs a new one.

!

Interconnect wiring

If alarms are linked by an interconnect wire, it's tested and reconnected so the set still works together.

!

Supply circuit

Hardwired alarms are fed from a 240V circuit; we confirm it's sound and protected.

!

Correct position

Existing positions aren't always ideal. We'll suggest moving alarms that sit in dead air spaces or near kitchens.

!

Battery backup

Mains alarms include a backup battery; we confirm it's fitted and active on installation.

How it works

How we install it.

1. Inspect. We test the current alarms, read their labels and check the wiring and bases.

2. Quote. A written quote for like-for-like replacement or an upgraded layout, as you prefer.

3. Replace. Circuit isolated, old alarms removed, new Emerald alarms and bases fitted and connected.

4. Test and certify. Each alarm tested, interconnection confirmed, and a CCEW issued for the hardwired work.

Common problems

Common PSA Emerald problems.

!

Intermittent chirp

Typically a backup battery or end-of-life warning. Our smoke alarm beeping guide covers safe checks.

!

New alarm won't fit the base

Bases and connectors change between generations. Replacing the base solves it.

!

Linked alarms not sounding together

A broken interconnect wire or incompatible replacement. We trace and fix it.

!

Alarm sounding with no smoke

Dust, insects, steam or an ageing sensor. Expired alarms should be replaced.

Questions

PSA Emerald Smoke alarm: common questions.

Can a new Emerald alarm plug into my old base?

Sometimes, depending on the models. We check on site and replace the base where needed.

Should I replace all my alarms at once?

If they were installed together, they'll usually reach their replace-by dates together, so replacing the set is often sensible.

Can I just change the battery in a hardwired alarm?

You can replace a backup battery if the alarm is designed for it. Removing or rewiring the alarm itself is a job for a licensed electrician.

Are photoelectric alarms better?

They're generally recommended for homes. We can replace ionisation alarms with photoelectric ones.

Do you work in rentals?

Yes. We coordinate with agents and tenants. See our landlord electrician page.
