Clipsal makes smoke alarms alongside its switches and switchboards, including mains-powered (hardwired) alarms with battery backup. We install, replace and interconnect Clipsal smoke alarms across the Inner West and Sydney.

A hardwired smoke alarm runs from your home's 240V supply, with a backup battery that keeps it working during a blackout. Because it's connected to fixed wiring, it must be installed by a licensed electrician. Battery-only alarms can be fitted by anyone, but they rely entirely on the battery being kept alive.
Clipsal alarms are a natural fit in homes that already have Clipsal switches or a Clipsal board, and many existing hardwired installations in Sydney use them. The most common job we do is replacing ageing alarms: smoke alarms don't last forever, and each one has a replace-by date marked on it.
Blue Link Electrical is a licensed electrician based in Hurlstone Park (NSW Contractor Licence 332956C). We install hardwired alarms, interconnect them so they sound together, and test every one before we leave.
Most modern alarms, Clipsal's included, use photoelectric sensing, which fire services in Australia generally recommend because it responds well to the smouldering fires common in homes. When replacing, check the type on the label and choose photoelectric unless there's a specific reason not to.
Interconnection means when one alarm detects smoke, they all sound. That can be done with an extra wire between alarms or, with suitable models, wirelessly. Interconnection generally only works between compatible alarms from the same maker, so replacing one alarm in an interconnected set usually means sticking with the same brand or replacing the set. Read more in our interconnected smoke alarms guide.
Alarms go where smoke will reach them and people will hear them, typically hallways outside bedrooms and on every level. See NSW smoke alarm rules.
Hardwired alarms need a 240V supply from a suitable lighting or dedicated circuit, with RCD protection at the board.
Wired interconnection needs a cable path between alarms, usually through the ceiling space. Wireless can help where there's no access.
Replacement alarms must suit the existing base or wiring, or the base is replaced too.
Old lath-and-plaster ceilings need careful fixing; we check before drilling.
1. Check. We count the existing alarms, note their type and age, and look at the ceiling space for cable routes.
2. Quote. A written quote for replacement or new alarms, including interconnection if you want it.
3. Install. Circuit isolated, alarms and bases fitted, wiring connected and interconnect cable run where needed.
4. Test. Every alarm tested, interconnection confirmed by testing one and checking all sound, and a CCEW issued for the hardwired work.
Usually a low backup battery or an alarm at end of life. See Clipsal smoke alarm beeping.
An alarm too close to cooking or steam. Repositioning or a different alarm type may help.
Normal for interconnected alarms when one triggers, but repeated false triggers need investigating. See hardwired alarms all going off.
Check the date on each unit. Expired alarms should be replaced, not just given a new battery.
Detailed troubleshooting:
No. Hardwired alarms must be installed by a licensed electrician. You can test them and, where designed for it, change backup batteries.
They'll each work as standalone alarms, but interconnection generally only works between compatible alarms from the same maker.
Each alarm has a replace-by date marked on it. Replace it by that date, even if it still beeps when tested.
It depends on the building and its history; newer homes and major renovations usually need them. Our hardwired vs battery guide explains the differences.
