Rangehood not working?

A rangehood that won't run is usually down to one of a few things: power not reaching it, a control or remote problem, or a fault in the motor or control board. The first can often be sorted with a quick look; the others need the right person.

If the checks below don't bring it back, call 0421 772 661. We test rangehood supplies and wiring across the Inner West.

Safety first

Before you do anything.

If the rangehood smells of burning, hums without turning, makes grinding noises, or grease has caught alight, switch it off and don't use it. For any flames, turn off the cooktop, smother if safe, get out and call 000. Turn off power at the switchboard if it's safe to do so.

Don't remove the rangehood's canopy, filters housing or any covers to get at the wiring or power point behind it. Many rangehoods are plugged in or wired behind panels that are for an electrician to open.

Quick checks

Safe things you can check yourself.

!

Try the light and fan separately

If the light works but the fan doesn't, power is reaching the rangehood. That points to a fan, control or motor issue rather than the supply.

!

Check the power point (if visible)

Some rangehoods plug into a power point inside an overhead cupboard. If you can see it without removing anything, make sure it's switched on.

!

Check the switchboard

Look for a tripped breaker or safety switch on the kitchen power circuit. Reset it once; if it trips again, leave it off.

!

Replace remote batteries

If your rangehood uses a remote control, try fresh batteries and check the manual for how to re-pair it.

!

Clean the filters

Heavily clogged grease filters can make a rangehood seem weak or noisy. Clean or replace them following the manual.

Causes

What usually causes it.

No power. A tripped circuit, a power point switched off, or a plug that has worked loose in the cupboard. Sometimes a loose or overheated power point behind the rangehood has failed. Replacing it is electrical work, and we also check the circuit while we're there.

Power point in a poor location. Rangehood power points are often tucked into tight spaces where heat and grease build up. Over time that can damage the outlet or plug. During a kitchen renovation, it's worth placing the outlet where it can be reached for servicing.

Controls and remotes. Touch panels, push buttons and remotes can fail or need resetting. These are appliance issues; check the manual and contact the manufacturer if needed.

Motor or control board failure. A fan that hums without spinning, runs intermittently or has stopped altogether while the light still works usually has a motor or board fault. That's a job for the manufacturer's service network or an appliance repairer.

When to call

When it needs an electrician.

Call an electrician if the rangehood is completely dead with the circuit on, if the power point behind it needs checking or replacing, if anything trips when it runs, or if you're adding a new rangehood that needs a power point installed.

We test the supply, repair or relocate the power point and confirm everything is safe. If it's the rangehood itself, we'll tell you so you can contact the manufacturer. More on our oven, cooktop and rangehood installation page.

Questions

Common questions

My rangehood light works but the fan doesn't. Is it electrical?

Power is reaching the rangehood, so the fault is likely in the motor, fan or controls. That's an appliance repair.

Where is my rangehood's power point?

Often in the cupboard above or behind the canopy. If you can't see it without removing covers, leave it to an electrician.

Can I replace the rangehood myself if it just plugs in?

Physically fitting a plug-in rangehood is often handyman work, but any new power point or wiring must be done by a licensed electrician.

Why does my rangehood trip the power?

It could be the motor, the wiring or the power point. Leave it off and have the circuit tested.

Do you install rangehood power points?

Yes. We install, relocate and replace power points for rangehoods as part of kitchen work.
