When a Hikvision camera drops off the recorder or shows offline in the Hik-Connect app, the cause is usually one of three things: the camera has lost power, the network link has dropped, or the app has lost its connection to the recorder rather than the camera itself.
Work through the safe checks below first. If the camera is still dark, ring 0421 772 661 and we'll trace the cabling and power from the recorder to the camera.
If you see scorch marks, smell burning, or notice water inside a camera housing, junction box or around the recorder and its power supply, don't handle it. Switch off at the power point or main switch only if it's safe, and keep clear. Call 000 if there is fire or anyone is hurt.
Don't climb to cameras on high eaves or open junction boxes. CCTV installation and repair in NSW is licensed security work, and roof-line access is where most DIY injuries happen.
If every camera is offline, the problem is almost always the recorder, the PoE switch or the internet connection, not the cameras. If only one is down, the fault is usually on that camera's cable or port.
Check the NVR is switched on at the power point and its screen or status lights look normal. If cameras run through a separate PoE switch, check that switch has power too.
If the cameras show live on a monitor plugged into the NVR but the Hik-Connect app says offline, the cameras are fine. The issue is the internet, the router or the app account.
Turn the NVR (and PoE switch, if fitted) off at the power point, wait a short while, then turn it back on. Give it a few minutes to boot and bring the cameras back.
If other devices in the house have lost internet, the app will show everything offline. Restart the modem/router at the plug, or check your provider's outage page.
If the recorder lives in a garage or cupboard on its own circuit, look for a tripped breaker or safety switch. Reset once. If it trips again, leave it off and call us.
Lost PoE power. Most Hikvision IP cameras are powered over the network cable from the NVR's PoE ports or a PoE switch. A failed port, an overloaded PoE budget or a tired power supply in the recorder can drop one camera, or several at once.
Damaged or poorly terminated cable. Outdoor cable runs get chewed by rodents, crushed under roof tiles or let water into a joint. Plugs crimped without proper weatherproofing corrode over time, and the camera starts dropping in and out before going dark completely.
Network or IP address changes. A new router, an NBN change or someone moving cables in the comms cupboard can stop the recorder or app reaching the cameras. That's a network setup issue rather than a wiring fault.
Camera or account fault. If power and cabling test fine, the camera itself may have failed, or the Hik-Connect account or device sharing needs attention. Hardware faults go through the supplier's warranty process; we'll confirm the cabling and power are sound first.
Call us if a camera stays offline after a restart, if cameras drop out in wet weather, if the NVR or PoE switch has no power while the power point works, or if a cable has been damaged during building or roof work.
We test each cable run, check PoE power at the camera end, and tell you whether it's a cabling or power job we can fix or a device or account issue for the manufacturer. Our Hikvision installation page explains how a system should be set up.
If it shows live on the recorder's own screen, the camera is fine. The app has lost contact with the recorder, usually because of the internet connection, a router change or the account.
That points to water getting into a cable joint or the plug at the camera. It needs the connection remade and weatherproofed properly.
Yes. Ports and the recorder's internal power supply can fail. We test the port and, if needed, move the camera to a separate PoE switch.
Not as a first step. A reset can wipe its network and recording settings and make things harder. Check power and the network first, and refer to the manufacturer's support before resetting.
