LG air conditioner wiring

Putting in an LG split or multi-split system? The unit installer looks after the refrigeration; the circuit, isolator and switchboard work need a licensed electrician. We do that across the Inner West and Sydney.

Ring 0421 772 661 and tell us the LG model, how many indoor heads you're planning, and where the switchboard is.

LG Air conditioner electrical connection installation.

LG makes split system air conditioners alongside its appliances and TVs, and its systems turn up in plenty of Sydney homes. The work splits cleanly between two trades: an ARC-licensed refrigeration technician installs the units and pipework and handles the refrigerant, and an electrician wires and isolates the system.

Our part starts at your switchboard. We add a suitably protected circuit, run the cable to the outdoor unit, fit an isolating switch there, connect the supply and test the lot. We can work to your installer's timetable so the system can be commissioned without delay.

Blue Link Electrical is a licensed electrician based in Hurlstone Park (NSW Contractor Licence 332956C), wiring air conditioners in older cottages and terraces as well as newer homes and apartments.

Know your model

Single heads, multi-splits and LG ducted.

LG offers wall-mounted splits, multi-split systems where one outdoor unit drives several indoor heads, and ducted systems. Multi-splits are worth a mention: electrically they usually need one supply to the outdoor unit rather than a circuit per room, but that single circuit has to suit the combined capacity. The installation manual confirms how your particular setup should be fed.

LG's ThinQ app gives Wi-Fi control of compatible units. That's a network matter, not an electrical one. From our side, the key questions are the supply the manual specifies, the protection it recommends, the cable size for your run, and whether your switchboard and main supply have room for it.

Before we install

What the installation needs.

!

One circuit for the system

Sized to the outdoor unit's documented supply. Our dedicated circuit guide explains why it shouldn't share.

!

Outdoor isolator

Rated for outdoor use and fitted near the condenser so the system can be isolated for servicing.

!

Protection

Safety switch protection on the circuit, usually by an RCBO sized to the manual's recommendation.

!

Switchboard capacity

A spare position on the board and enough capacity in the supply. An older board may need an upgrade.

!

Cable path

Planned with your installer so the power and the refrigerant pipework reach the outdoor unit neatly.

How it works

How we install it.

1. Confirm the setup. LG model, number of indoor heads, outdoor unit location and supply point from the manual. We also check the switchboard.

2. Rough-in. We install the cable and the new protective device at the board.

3. Fit-off. Isolator fitted and sealed, supply connected once the units are in place. The refrigeration technician then completes and commissions the system.

4. Certify. Testing to AS/NZS 3000 and a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work.

Common problems

Common LG problems.

!

Breaker or RCD trips on start

We check the protective device, the terminations and the insulation of the circuit. If they pass, the issue is inside the unit and goes to LG's service network.

!

Isolator worn out by weather

Faded, brittle isolators let water in and cause trips after storms. See power tripping when it rains.

!

Multi-split added to an old board

A larger combined load can push an older board or supply too far. We check before adding it.

!

Extra heads added later

Adding indoor units changes the system's load. The circuit should be rechecked against the manual.

Questions

LG Air conditioner electrical connection: common questions.

Does each LG indoor head need its own circuit?

Usually not on a multi-split; power typically goes to the outdoor unit. Your model's installation manual confirms the arrangement.

Do you install LG units?

No. The units, pipework and refrigerant are handled by an ARC-licensed refrigeration technician. We do the electrical work.

Can you set up ThinQ Wi-Fi control?

App setup is done through LG's app on your home Wi-Fi. We provide the power; pairing is separate.

Will my switchboard need upgrading?

Only if it has no room or can't safely take the extra load. We'll check and tell you before quoting.

Are you licensed?

Yes. NSW Electrical Contractor Licence 332956C, fully insured, and we issue a Certificate of Compliance.
