Hitachi air conditioner electrical work

Whether you're installing a new Hitachi system or have an older one that keeps tripping, the electrical side is our job: the circuit, the isolator at the outdoor unit and the protection at the switchboard.

Hitachi Air conditioner electrical connection installation.

Hitachi split and ducted systems are installed in homes around Sydney, and some have been running for many years. That means our Hitachi work is a mix of new connections and checking older installations whose isolators, cables or protection are showing their age.

For a new system, the refrigeration technician installs the units and handles the refrigerant (an ARC-licensed task we never do). We provide the dedicated circuit, outdoor isolator and switchboard protection, then test and certify. For an older system, we test the existing circuit and tell you honestly whether the problem is electrical or in the unit.

Blue Link Electrical is a licensed electrician based in Hurlstone Park (licence 332956C), working across the Inner West and Sydney.

Know your model

New and older Hitachi systems.

Hitachi sells wall splits and ducted systems in Australia. As with any brand, the supply a unit needs depends on its capacity and type, and the installation manual is the document that settles it: supply requirements, recommended protection and where the power terminates.

If you're replacing an old Hitachi with a new one, don't assume the existing circuit is fine. Older installations sometimes predate safety switch protection on that circuit, use an isolator that has degraded in the sun, or were sized for a smaller unit. We check all three and quote anything that needs bringing up to date.

Before we install

What the installation needs.

!

Dedicated supply

Each fixed system on its own appropriately sized circuit. See air conditioner dedicated circuits.

!

Isolator in good condition

A sound, sealed, outdoor-rated isolating switch next to the condenser. Old ones are often due for replacement.

!

Safety switch protection

RCD protection on the circuit, often by an RCBO. Older installations may not have it.

!

Circuit matched to the new unit

Cable and breaker checked against the new unit's manual, not just carried over from the old one.

!

Board and supply headroom

Room on the board and capacity in the main supply for the load.

How it works

How we install it.

1. Inspect. We look at the Hitachi model and manual, the switchboard and, for replacements, the existing cable and isolator.

2. Upgrade or install. New circuit and protection where needed, or reuse of a suitable existing circuit after testing.

3. Isolate and connect. Isolator fitted or replaced and supply connected. The refrigeration technician commissions the system.

4. Test and certify. Testing to AS/NZS 3000, with a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work.

Common problems

Common Hitachi problems.

!

Older unit tripping the safety switch

Could be water in the isolator, a deteriorated cable or an internal fault. We test the electrical side; unit faults go to Hitachi's service network or your air conditioning technician.

!

Isolator crumbling or discoloured

Years of sun make plastic housings brittle. Replace it before it lets water in.

!

Circuit without RCD protection

Some older installations lack it. Adding protection is a good safety improvement. See RCD vs RCBO.

!

Trips only on hot days

When the unit works hardest. Can point to an undersized circuit, loose connections or a unit fault.

Questions

Hitachi Air conditioner electrical connection: common questions.

My old Hitachi keeps tripping. Is it worth fixing?

We test the circuit and isolator first. If they're fine, the fault is in the unit, and an air conditioning technician can advise whether repair makes sense.

Can the new unit use my old circuit?

Only if the cable, protection and isolator suit the new unit's manual and are in good condition. We test before reusing.

Do you install Hitachi units?

No. An ARC-licensed refrigeration technician installs the units and handles refrigerant. We do the electrical connection.

How often should an outdoor isolator be replaced?

There's no fixed interval. Replace it when the housing is cracked, faded and brittle, or water has got in.

Are you licensed?

Yes. NSW Electrical Contractor Licence 332956C, fully insured, with a Certificate of Compliance issued for the work.
